Is this round widely available in South Africa? Can you bring your own ammo for a hunt? I have heard that you cannot. I tried a search to see if this has been covered, but I didn't locate a previous thread. Any experiences with the 300WSM on plains game? Thanks in advance for any input.

If someone told you that you cannot bring your own ammo to hunt in South Africa you need to find people that actually know what their talking about to ask your questions, this is an excellent place. There is no chance of finding 300WSM factory ammo in South Africa except from another visiting hunter. I took mine in April of this year as well as a 35 Whelen and had no problems, but I realized that if I lost my ammo I would need to borrow a gun to complete my hunt. Of course it kills as well as any other 300 mag, which is very well indeed, just use good bullets.

bushgun, You are permitted to import up to 200 rounds of ammunition per firearm into RSA. Airlines limit your total weight of all ammunition transported to 11 pounds (5 Kgs). Go to this website PHASA click on "General Hunting Information" and then click on "Importation of Firearms". Regards, Terry

Bushgun, welcome to the forum. Your outfitter should be telling you everything you need to know about your hunt.......including the import of your firearm.

In 2002 I used my 300 WSM and 150 gr. ammo on Kudu and Gemsbok out to about 300 yards. Both one-shot kills. No one particularly cared about my ammo except guys in camp who hadn't seen a 300 WSM before. I gave about a half box away, one bullet at a time. I think 95% of people need a problem to overcome in order to feel successful. You and your 300 WSM will be very successful and your ammo will come and go with you as easily as you and your rifle.

bushgun, I took my 300WSM in Aug '03 and June of this year with no problems. My then 17 YO son used his Ruger 300WSM to take 6 great animals including Kudu, Zebra, Blue Wildebeest and Warthog with 1 shot each. In '03, I used mine to take 4 animals with 6 shots. RSA prefers factory boxes, so if you handload, you might think about packing them that way to cut down on questions, etc. Good luck and have a great hunt! ![]()

Thanks everyone for the info about the 300 WSM. An acquaintance is putting together a trip in May and the details are not finalized. He was telling me about the non importation of ammo. Now I'll know to further investigate the "details" as they become available.

[Any experiences with the 300WSM on plains game? One of the guys in our camp used 180 gr Power Points in his 300 WSM, and they were the worst bullet the PH's had ever seen. On any game bigger than an Impala, they came completely apart, and some did not exit the Impala's either. Needless to say, they spent a lot of time trailing wounded game. This in not the WSM fault, with proper bullets it will do just fine.
