Kenyan villagers feast on fallen elephant August 21 2006 at 01:57AM Nyeri - Kenyan villagers tasted sweet revenge on Sunday, feasting on a marauding elephant that slipped into a septic tank as it tried to eat bananas from a local farm. Farmers killed and carved up the animal with machetes as dancing residents from nearby villages at the foot of Mount Kenya joined in celebration, which started late on Saturday. Elephants can wipe out entire annual harvests and sometimes kill farmers. "Now it is our turn to make a meal from the destroyer of our crops," reveller Grace Wakirima said. Across Africa, animals and humans are coming into closer contact as swelling populations put pressure on land. "We have been spending sleepless nights for the last three years as these elephants and a herd of others keep on terrorising our farms and destroying crops," Margaret Gacheru shouted above the ruckus. Kenya wildlife authorities came to remove the elephant's tusks, but did not stop the villagers' celebration. If the farmers "killed" the ele with machetes, that must have been a sight from hell. | |||
