Hornady Heavy Magnum Load... What for?!!!

Hello fellow hunters and shooters,

I came home last week with 4 boxes of Hornady Heavy Magnum ammo in 375H&H. I bought them because they were cheap, about 41 $Canadian plus tax. I was also interested in trying out some loads that push a 270gr bullet at around 2870fps. All I can say is that from the bench, my Winch 70 stainless kicks me pretty good... it does not have a scope and is fitted with the factory recoil pad! Now reading on this website different stories, I was wondering why in the heck Hornady came up with such load? If I take into account all of your stories, pushing a Hornady Interlock at those speeds will rip that bullet to pieces when it hits bone! Now I use my 375 for moose, and reading your comments with the interlock, it would be pretty foolish to shoot a moose at close range with such load! Now, my question... What did Hornady think when they loaded such round? You can't really use it up close on big stuff because it will explode on a shoulder, and I don't hunt moose at 300 yards... So unless you want to use it on paper, or shoot woodchucks with you 375 and use a load that delivers 5000 ft-lbs of energy to blow up grapefruits at 400 yards, what is that load good for!?

Please feel free to share your thoughts

While I prefer premium bullets for hunting big game with the 375 I have shot the Hornady Heavy Mag 270 gr in one of my 375's. They do kick harder than any other 375 load I have fired. The did shoot real good at 300 yards however... so IF I was going to use that load it would be for the likes of elk, caribou, spot and stalk black bear etc if I was in an area where long shots [over 200 yards] would be common, as I usually wait for a broadside shot to present itself in these situations.
I would not use this load in the timber.

I haven't tried them for at least 8 years or so. I too tried their loading in 375 H&H, and when I cronographed them I wasn't too impressed. The velocity was up there, but the Extreme Spread for a 10 shot string was 115 fps, and the standard deviation was quite high as well-don't recall the exact number though.

Your post is most accurate and I suspect that since Hornady is now making their .416 soft point in a bonded bullet you'll soon see the 270 Grain .375 in a bonded state as well. This should increase the usefulness of the heavy magnum load.
