I hunted Zimbabwe in June last year. Great time. I got to met T.Carr at the airport in Jo-berg. I think we were on the same plane that lost an engine. I plan on hunting Zim in Sept this year. How's the weather, bugs, snakes etc? June was great last year. Sept is the only time I have available this year. Any words of wisdom are appreciated.

Thanks, PG

PG,

Welcome to the forum.

September is going to be warm. And depending on the area, probably very little bugs and snakes.

I've been there three times in September/October.

The mornings and afternoon are OK, but midday to around 3pm is the hottest and can get up to 38-40 deg C.

Good time to find a shady tree for a siesta.

The heat then is still dry so not too bad.

I hunted Zimbabwe in both early May (buggy and snaky that year) and early July (somewhat cold but no vermin).

I asked the PH's what time of year they thought was the best and all basically thought August/early September was the best time on balance. They thought late September/October to be too hot.

Hey PG,

Weren't we the unlucky ones that got stuck in the slow moving immigration line at the airport?

PG,

Zim has similar climate all over in September, but the individual areas can matter more to you. It can be very different from the Zambezi to the Low Veld. Where are you going to be?

I hunted the Low Veld in southeastern Zim in September of '01 and '02 (mid month to early October both times), around 1,800 feet in altitude. I had a couple of days that reached 104 degrees F/40 degrees C, but also a couple that were 53 degrees F/12 degrees C when storms blew through. The remainder of the days had highs in the 70s F/20s C. Very mild, but on the warm side.

I almost saw a snake once. I was visiting PH Gordon Duncan's house, and he said there goes a yellow-bellied sand snake. I of course asked "Where?", but it was gone in the garden. By the way the common Harare garden snake is a cobra, but you don't often see them in the hunting season. Harare is higher in altitude, on the order of 5,000 feet IIRC.

Terry,
Good to see you remembered.

Jim, thanks for the info. We will be in the Zambezi for cape buff and travel southwest past Bulowaya towards the border for plainsgame.

Anyone else going to Zim in Sept this year?

Regards, PG

N'gagi and I will be hunting the North Chewore area in mid-August. Should be the perfect time to go.

I hunted the same area in late October 2001 and I agree with LV Eric, it was HOT!!!!! Great hunt though.

September should be a great time to be there as well, but kind of a bummer for you since N'gagi and I are going to shoot the two biggest buffalo in August and you will have to settle for 3rd biggest

Tim,
Thanks for the heads-up. In that I am from Riverside, Ca I think I can handle the heat. Having to settle for the third largest buff....Well, I guess I will have to deal with this issue, perhaps therapy will help.

If you are in Southern Cal, maybe a therapeutic shoot would help. Let me know if you are interested.

PG,

Yes, we will have to get to the range together for some Big Bore practice. I will be taking my a 416 Rigby for buff and a 375 H&H as my light rifle.

N'gagi will be taking his custom mauser 458 Win Mag for buff and his 375 H&H as his light rifle.

Mark "N'gagi" Jackson lives in Upland, CA so not far from you. I live in Sunset Beach, CA which is just south of Seal Beach and next to Huntington Harbor. Jumping on the 91 freeway for a day at the range is pretty easy for me. I usually go to the San Gariel Valley Gun Club in Duarte, CA which is where the 605 freeway ends at the 210.

By the way, I will make sure N'gagi shoots the 3rd largest buffalo and leaves the 2nd largest for you.

I am going to Zim in June. I will save some animals for you late arrivals.....Mainly because they will only let me carry 11 lbs of ammo.

Hey guys-
Glad to finally be logged in and able to share in the fun. New to the forum and have been haaving trouble joining in.
Going to Zim myself in August, to the Malapati area in SE Zim. Hoping August will be great, and also hoping NE450No2 runs out of ammo or money early or we're all S.O.L. on big buff. I've seen him shoot, and as a matter of fact he outshot me w/ my own double! Kinda bad manners, don't you think!! Good luck everyone

Tim,
Sounds like a plan. My hunting partner lives in Huntington Beach. I haven't been to fish canyon aka SGV gun club for some time. If you prefer west end gun club I am a member. Haven't been there since the fire, but have 100 yard to 600 yards. Give me a date and time or PM and we can put it together.

NE you sir are a gentleman.

Regards to all, PG

Welcome to the forum. As regards to my shooting.... Hunting almost totally with my doubles for the last 5 to 6 years has paid off. These doubles are such fine rifles you just point them in the general direction and they hit real good.

Buffalo Bob, your reply is on the way.
