Last week in Kruger National Park I happened to come across this buffalo in a herd of about 200.

I've seen a few pictures of similar buffalo, no bosses, I'll pass.

He's like a stag or cactus buck here in the states, that I've seen numerous times.

They grow big antlers, but with no balls they have no testosterone, thus no urge to rub their velvet, or to participate in the rut, etc.

This buffalo appears to be a bull with no balls, screwed up horns, along with some other problems going on.

Frankly, I don't know what they heck that thing is - but I wouldn't shoot "it" regardless! Smiler

Must be a pseudo-hermaphrodite or possibly a free-martin.

Or a bull which had its nuts removed when a calf. Have seen this once - by kind favor of Mr. Hyena. A buffalo's boss is a secondary sexual characteristic - thanks to testosterone. Caustrated buffalo never develop a boss and this could be such a fellow.

Wouldn't a freemartin have a vulva, etc?

Or perhaps a cryptorchid?

It does not look like it has a sheath either. Be nice to see where it peed from. The vulva of a free-Martin can be very rudimentary and could hide in those wrinkles around the anus seen in that pic.

Cryptorchids usually produce more testosterone than animals with descended testicles...therefore should have secondary sex characteristics.

It also has prominent teats.
