Guys

As the economic situation goes ever increasingly down the toilet, Govts (as we all know) are constantly looking for ways to hike taxes...... here in Portugal, VAT is currently running at 23% and they're talking of increasing it to between 25% and 27% and not only do they tax you on the trophies themselves, they also tax you on the cost of the shipping and even the cost of the bloody container the trophies come in!

It's taken us forever to get what trophies we wanted to keep from Africa moved across here and because of the permit hassles and ridiculous taxes we were on the verge of giving up and donating the trophies to Luan's trophy room when Safari Air Cargo recommended we try www.scantrophytrans.com and it turned out to be considerably cheaper with VAT at just 5% and far less paperwork hassles.

I can highly recommend this company for anyone importing anywhere into the EU.

In Denmark the value of imported trophies as set at almost nothing. So the VAT in very low but you pay the full 25% on the shipment cost

Good Hunting

Carl & Bwana338

They arrived today and total price was half of what we were quoted from a Portuguese importer...... how they do that and include trucking all the way from Denmark, I have no idea but service from scantrophytrans.com was fantastic so we're dead chuffed with them.

MBB

LOL...... it's a bit different this time because we're importing rather than exporting and some of the stuff needed CITES permits...... the Portuguese guy we first tried to use was as much use as a one legged man at an arse kicking party so finding STT was a Godsend for us. tu2

More generally, I got sick of dragging trophies around the world so we only bought those few with a lot of sentimental value this time and I have to say, there were times I began to wish we hadn't bothered with any of it. (Glad we soldiered on now though)....... The biggest problem was Portugal didn't allow us to bring hunting trophies in as part of our household goods so they had to be shipped separately.

The next question is: HTF do I get a buffalo trophy right up in the apex of the roof?

Good to know. I needed to do do some research on how to get trophies into EU instead of the US considering the recent ban on Zim elephant trophies by the USFNW recently.

I think I'll give those guys a call.

Hey, maybe I can find some of our American friends some holiday homes here so they can keep their trophies! Wink

We did consider it and I think would have stood a good chance of getting in because Susan has a sister living there but in the end, we decided we'd prefer to head towards Europe rather than the US.

Gotcha
At least Portugal sounds like fairly mellow place
Good for you
Too bad Africa is so screwed up that people more likely move out than in
I think lots of us would have second homes, land etc. if not for the corruption, lawlessness and overal unstable political situations/civil wars
Very unfortunate

The one thing the Portuguese aren't good at is marketing and the central & northern zones hardly get a mention compared to the Algarve which is a shame because it has a lot going or it...... My own area is virtually crime free, has good hunting & fishing, one is rarely more than 20 minutes away from a trout stream at the very least, infrastructure is good (thanks largely to the EU) & property is cheap. Smiler

Yes, it's a great shame that Africa is such a stuff up but sadly it gets worse by the day & that ain't gonna change in the foreseeable future. - Logically, it should be the most successful continent on the planet. It's awash with natural resources, mostly has a good climate and has a massive and cheap labour force and yet is a basket case.

Ah well, if my Uncle had tits, he'd be my Aunt! Wink
