Mutually inclusive or Mutually exclusive?

BTW How long did it take for Sub-Saharan Africa to "invent" the wheel? wave

No-one ever did, it was imported from Persia. In Sub-Saharan Africa, it was imported from Europe. Just look at what those damn colonials did with the things. They carted all sorts of goodies that no-one wanted all over the place.

Shakari,
Temp rifle import is not difficult. the forms are available at the SAPS website. and there is no fee. Have done it myself 4 yrs in a row. Yes, getting an extension to ones 90 day temp resident permit is a hassle. it cost me R800 plus 2 trips to George once. easier to just book your return flight 90 days or less after arrival. another option is a retired person permit requiring a good qty of redtape and patience but one can stay up to 180 days per yr. Know a Brit couple who do this in RSA. they are selling a house in Portugal and seem to be convinced that living in RSA and Jersey is the way to go, but they have no children and their assets are offshore RSA.

Temp import is indeed easy if a hunter is simply coming in for a hunt and leaving soon after but bringing it in on a longer permit rather than a short duration such as for a hunt is very difficult indeed and effectively requires a different permit.

The immigration act is newly amended and visa extensions under the new rules are truly ludicrous..... as indeed is the whole act which (for example) now requires 'any conveyance' coming to RSA must before departure from it's point of origin must convey details, including passport, ID & home address etc of all persons on board to the home affairs dept.

That'll work great for a 747 coming from London or an Airbus from the US but not so well on a taxi from Maputo or a donkey cart coming from Botswana...... animal

The new amendments incidentally are currently forcing whites who have been in RSA for considerable number of years to leave in droves whilst allowing blacks with no income, jobs, education, qualifications or visible means of support to walk in across the borders and get immediate PR simply by walking into home affairs and asking for it..........

What about AIDS?

I have heard that the official statistic is that 40% of the blacks in RSA have AIDS (or HIV--not sure I Know what the difference is). Whites don't get AIDS because they know what causes it. Does this mean that the white/black balance and the general way the country is run will change?

Personally, I believe things will only get steadily worse in the foreseeable future and if Julius Malema or one his ilk comes to power, things will get a helluva lot worse very quickly indeed.......

Shakari,
Can understand your frustration with how things have changed because my wife is also south african. but beg to differ re rifle permits. the temp rifle permit application is avail from the SAPS website, the cost is zero, have done it this way 4 yrs running. Regarding long visits to RSA, 3 months allows a person lots of opportunity to tour, enjoy the culinary temptations, and of course do lots of hunting. I once made the mistake of getting tickets more than 90 days apart and had to visit Homeland Affairs twice plus R800 plus stern lecture, but this can be easily avoided by purchasing air tickets with return 90 days or less from arrival. And there is even another option allowing a foreigner up to 180 days residence via special pensioner application. Know some Brits who do this.

You've missed my point entirely. The NEW amendments to the immigration act mean you can no longer apply for a visa extension inside RSA and must now return home to make the application. Therefore you have to spend additional money on airfares, lose time on travelling and might just as well go home and then come in on a new visa instead of extending the old one.

I'm very familiar indeed with the temporary import process and visitors to our site at www.shakariconnection.com can download firearm import application forms, (application) guides and visa application forms etc for many African countries there.

As for temporary firearm import for longer stays, you might like to study the wording of the temporary import licence AND the relevent parts of the act. You'll find that longer stays can cause several problems with regard to the firearms. Not least amongst them, storage problems when away from the hunting areas etc.

These problems are not insurmountable but they can make life difficult.

And there are some off us that are still positive and BELIEVE that things will be ok one day and there will still be a place for us in the future of Africa. Because where will we go. My family have been on this continent for nearly three hundred years now. The history of this land is smoke fire, ash and dust, but there is also a the green fields, rain, cool weather of a land a plenty.

I lived in the UK for 6 years. I returned to SA after I got my little red book from the queens governement. Been there done that. And you will never get me back there for anything in the world.

But this thread has been hi-jacked in a spectacular fashion....sorry Pensylltucky!

Charl,

I'm glad to hear you got your self a UK passport and don't blame you at all for saying you hope you never have to go back there.....

like you, I find the place to now be an immense cesspool..... however, I'd suggest you maintain the passport (and overseas bank account) so you & your family have an easy way out should you ever need it.

Just before we left, I met a white lady who was a 3rd or 4th generation resident of Swaziland who told me she and her entire family had been kicked out just a few years ago...... She was absolutely heartbroken about the situation.
