I am heading to Namibia this summer for a 10 day plains game hunt. I am trying to decide on which rifle. My father is going also, so I wanted to use one case for both rifles. I use the .375 ultra most of the time here in Alaska and use the .300wsm for sheep. I am leaning towards the .375, but was intersted in other opinions. I tend to lean on the side of big rifles, big holes, blood trail=dead animal. I hunt moose in really brushy areas, so I can tend to take shots that with the .375 that I would never take with the .300.

I took a 375 H&H and a 300 WSM to RSA last may. Took 7 of the 11 with the 375. The only animal I would have felt uncomfortable taking a shot with my 375 was a springbuck at about 400 yards. Can't go wrong with either on plains game (unless you will be facing some REALLY long shots). Good luck.

Shot 13 animals last July in Namibia from springbok/impala to kudu/zebra with my 375 H&H. ranges 60 to 360 yards. Sure worked great for them all.

The .300 WSM is plenty for all the plains game.....but the .375 is uniquely african and just having one is a comforting experience.....absolutely not needed but it's great to hunt with the finest all around African cartridge of all time.....

I've used the .300 Win. Mag. on a lot of plainsgame, as well as the .375 H&H. I have never seen that the .375 H&H kills plainsgame (even eland) any better than the .300, and that's my honest observation. I'd rather take a .300, since it's lighter to carry, shoots flatter, and kicks less.

I don't believe in the concept of brush-busting big game cartridges, and have never seen that any cartridge is truly reliable for shooting through brush. The idea is to shoot through OPENINGS in the brush, which is the only reliable strategy that really works, no matter what you're shooting. In Africa, I just haven't had that many occasions to shoot through brush. If it's THAT brushy, it's pretty hard to identify a vital aiming point to begin with.

To me, the idea of shooting a .375 RUM for an entire safari at every blinking little toy poddle-size, whitetail-size, and elk-size antelope sounds like a pretty dismal proposition, especially when the .300 kills the full gamut quite efficiently and quickly in the first place. The .375 RUM might add an airplane spin and a body slam to the killing process, but I doubt it......

I'd take the 300 and load it with 200 or 220 gr. Nolsers, Northforks or Woodleighs...but whatever blows your skirt up, after all its your hunt and your choice to make..either will work....

Northway,

I can promise you that the 300 will do anything necessay on a plains game hunt. Load it with a heavy for caliber premium bullet and just go kill stuff.

Mark
