Fellas: Over the past few days I have several emails from friends and a PH in Zim about hyper inflation, banks keeping the money and perhpas only allowing liited withdrawals and then only in coin, of gasoline shortages and up to 7$ a liter, of canned food up to 5$ a can for beans, etc. Several former hunting blocks have been sold to photographic companies. I was in Zim for three weeks this past July. There was limited money available at banks but prices were stable. What have you seen? What is the outlook for the future? I look forward to what you have to write. Most of it is rumour mongering, but there are indicators to be wary of that the ruling kleptocracy is up to its 2008 tricks. Cash shortages have plagued the country ever since the powers that be looted the nostra acounts a little over a year ago of more than $15bn. Then they started hoarding the remaining USD in circulation, causing artificial cash shortages that they made up for with the latest tound of homegrown monkey money, "bond notes" (they always come up with these cutesy little names like "bearer cheques" that don't fool anyone with a brain). With a general lack of liquidity, prices are going up because importers can't use bond notes and the euphemistically-named Reserve Bank (read "Reverse") is hoarding real money for the politicos. Like the Mugabe's, who have just imported Rolls Royces. The government is paying it's local bills, like salaries, with bank transfers it can't back. They are also issuing worthless treasury bills. One day your bank might give you $30 in worthless bond coins and the next you might get $300 in worthless bond notes. It is now a mandatory 10 years imprisonment for dealing in forex. But the USD and other real currencies are still legal tender. You just can't try and buy monkey money with real money at a different rate. There was a largely artificial fuel shortage last week that miraculously ended when Bob returned from his shopping trip to New York. $5 beans is pure fake news. A $1 steak pie a month ago is still a $1 steak pie today. But keep your ear to the ground. It takes a special kind of incompetence to screw up a USD economy, but they are making best efforts.

When I was there in late August of this year, Zimbabweans were only allowed to withdraw either $30 or $50 a day from the bank. Needless to say, there were long lines at the Banks, and it was obvious that things are headed back to the days of hyperinflation. When I transferred funds for my hunt, it took nearly three weeks for my PH and long term hunting operator to confirm the receipt of the funds. He said that is how it is in Zim these days.

The value of the dollar went to hell a number of years ago, nothing changed much, Magabe screwed his people..This is nothing new. Zim folk have been stripping the silver borders on the Zim dollar, and selling the silver..A toe sack full of Zim dollars is worth a US dollar bill these days. In the famous words of Lord Acton... "Power tends to corrupt and absolute power corrupts absolutely" I am always amazed by those who believe that those who rise to the top of a free market economy are or will be become "self serving" at the expense of others but those who rise to the top of a socialist economy will not. Human behavior is the same in both economies it is just the rules of competition are different. Mike Legistine actu quod scripsi? Never under estimate the internet community's ability to reply to your post with their personal rant about their tangentially related, single occurrence issue. ![]() What I have learned on AR, since 2001: 1. The proper answer to: Where is the best place in town to get a steak dinner? is…You should go to Mel's Diner and get the fried chicken. 2. Big game animals can tell the difference between .015 of an inch in diameter, 15 grains of bullet weight, and 150 fps. 3. There is a difference in the performance of two identical projectiles launched at the same velocity if they came from different cartridges. 4. While a double rifle is the perfect DGR, every 375HH bolt gun needs to be modified to carry at least 5 down. 5. While a floor plate and detachable box magazine both use a mechanical latch, only the floor plate latch is reliable. Disregard the fact that every modern military rifle uses a detachable box magazine. 6. The Remington 700 is unreliable regardless of the fact it is the basis of the USMC M40 sniper rifle for 40+ years with no changes to the receiver or extractor and is the choice of more military and law enforcement sniper units than any other rifle. 7. PF actions are not suitable for a DGR and it is irrelevant that the M1, M14, M16, & AK47 which were designed for hunting men that can shoot back are all PF actions. 8. 95 deg F in Africa is different than 95 deg F in TX or CA and that is why you must worry about ammunition temperature in Africa (even though most safaris take place in winter) but not in TX or in CA. 9. The size of a ding in a gun's finish doesn't matter, what matters is whether it’s a safe ding or not. 10. 1 in a row is a trend, 2 in a row is statistically significant, and 3 in a row is an irrefutable fact. 11. Never buy a WSM or RCM cartridge for a safari rifle or your go to rifle in the USA because if they lose your ammo you can't find replacement ammo but don't worry 280 Rem, 338-06, 35 Whelen, and all Weatherby cartridges abound in Africa and back country stores. 12. A well hit animal can run 75 yds. in the open and suddenly drop with no initial blood trail, but the one I shot from 200 yds. away that ran 10 yds. and disappeared into a thicket and was not found was lost because the bullet penciled thru. I am 100% certain of this even though I have no physical evidence. 13. A 300 Win Mag is a 500 yard elk cartridge but a 308 Win is not a 300 yard elk cartridge even though the same bullet is travelling at the same velocity at those respective distances.

I have seen no power outages, apart from maintenance, in Harare for over a year. The fuel "shortage" was a couple of weeks ago and only lasted a couple of days. Bank queues, yes.

I was there a couple of weeks ago hunting with Lowveld Safaris (PH Zane Bronkhorst) and it was indeed a mess. Cash was tight, we could not find butter or cooking oil. According to Zane it had started a couple of weeks before I arrived.
