I watched a short Cabelas' clip the other night which used footage of Osa taking a bull Elephant in the open with what must have been a charge.
Very dramatic one-shot kill.
If you get a chance watch.

I would love to purchase film or DVD of their adventures as I truly enjoyed the two books I've read.

This is my favorite period of time when it comes to rifles. I have the Johnson's book that was written after Martin died. Without me digging through it can anyone tell us what rifles they used?

I've been to the museum, a neat little place if you ever get a chance to visit.

I don't know if you can tell from the photos, but Osa was tiny.

Regards,

Terry

The list as given in "I Married Adventure". It is the rifles they used during the "Four Years in Paradise" period which is 1924-1928 (if I remember correctly).

3 English Blands, .470, double-barrel
1 English Bland, .275, Mannlicher action
1 American Springfield, .303, Mauser action
[Obviously an editing error. The rifle was probably in .30-06 Springfield. (Or maybe ".30-03"? Close to ".303"; an editing error maybe?). "Mauser action" must mean a bolt action as a descriptive term. I have seen photos of this rifle and it is a Springfield action. I read somewhere that it was a Griffin & Howe sporter. See below. - Bob]
1 English Rigby, .505, Mauser action
3 American Winchesters, .405, lever action
1 American Winchester, .32, lever action
2 English Jeffries [sic], .404, Mauser action
1 American Winchester shotgun, .12, double-barrel
1 American Ithaca, .20, double-barrel
1 American Ithaca, .20, saw-off [sic] shotgun, called riot gun
1 .38 Colt revolver
1 .45 Colt revolver

Hmmmmm........ I'd say they had a nice little battery!!!!

Bob,
Thanks for the eye candy. thumb

I've got the book _I Married Adventure_ by Osa Johnson.

Cloth covered hardback in brown and white zebra print, 376 pages, Lippincott, 1940. 6.5"x9.5"x almost 2" thick.

I found it in a used book store somewhere long ago for $1.50. A buck and a half.

The only mark in the book is the price pencilled on the front inside flap, which is a 2 page photo spread of giraffe on the veld.

It is a bit yellowed with age, but otherwise perfect.

Is this the first edition of the book, 1940? Obviously aimed at a mass market just before WWII.

Probably a lot of them out there so not rare, but still desirable. Ain't she sweet? Big Grin

A nice find.

As of a few years ago, no firearms were in the museum. Wonder what happened to them? The museum is worth visiting none-the-less.

Sadly, I grew up less than 25 miles from the place and never knew it was there until I had been to Africa 3 or four times in the '70's.

Well, worth a stop, sure would have liked to have seen it when I was a kid dreaming about hunting far off places.

I had an elderly friend who once was a PH in Kenya. His name was Clary Palmer-Wilson. He always recommended the Johnsons' books when I asked him about good reads on Africa.
Thanks for posting the photos. Simply enchanting.
