On my upcoming plains game hunt, we have the option to take a leopard-by chance for only additional trophy fee. Trophy fee is $3300 do you do it. My thinking is yes, only because that would be the cheapest leopard hunt one could do, my other thinking is no, because this is really not a leopard hunt, more like a leopard kill. What say you?

I used to go hunt in Zimbabwe at end of the season, when I am the last client for that year. The PH asks "What would you like to shoot?" Me "What have you got left?" PH "2 elephants, one lion, one leopard, 6 sable, 4 kudu, 10 buffalo, 6 zebra, 6 waterbuck, 11 hyaena, one crocodile, one hippo, 5 klipsringers, 3 duikers and 47 impala" Me "In other words, we can shoot anything we come across that is shootable ha?" PH "Yes" Me "We better get Walter into the act, otherwise we would never finish this quota, would we?" PH "I think we should give Walter a sleeping pill every morning! If he comes along there will not be any hunting done" Just think of it. You have paid a lot of money, and have travelled half way across the world, so why not shoot whatever is allowed to be shot?

Of Course you shoot it!! It's like saying certain animals may only be shot in a certain way... I'd much rather shoot a leopard as a target of opportunity rather than have to sit in a blind downwind of a rotting carcass... (I'm plagiarising..) Either way I'd shoot the cat if the opportunity arose, on the bait, spottted while stalking or even asleep in the tree. He'd get the good news. Rgds, FB

I agree with Jim. I have been to Africa 13 times. I have seen a leopard in the daylight one time. If you get the chance, you better take it.

You don't say which country you're going to be hunting? ........but, it's relatively unusual in most African countries for someone to have a Leopard permit 'just laying around'. And assuming you'd want, and be permitted to keep the trophy, you might like to consider that you're supposed (in theory at least!) to have your CITES import permit before you shoot the Leopard. I'm not for a moment suggesting there's anything 'not quite kosher' in the offer, I'm just making you aware of the normal permit situation.

I agree with Saeed... if anything is left on quota while you are already there and have paid the tare to get there. Shoot it! You'll regret it not having done it when you get home, believe me. Good point on the CITIES permit though, you want to get it before you leave to be sure you can import your chance leopard back to the states! On the plains of hesitation lie the bleached bones of ten thousand, who on the dawn of victory lay down their weary heads resting, and there resting, died. I was out hunting black bear a few years back, when a big wolf crossed my path. It took me a few seconds to gain my composure, but then I got the crosshairs on him PDQ. It turned out to be #10 in the SCI book at the time (if I had sent it in). I wasn't really hunting wolf, but that didn't matter. When Diana smiles, just say "thank you" and use the chance given. Pheonix, Of course if a good leopard presents itself do take it. The BUT is do not get sucked into hanging 15 baits to get a leopard that may not even be on the property. If the operator had good leopard he would be hunting them specifically at a much higher rate. Mark MARK H. Get the CITES permit before you go over, just in case! You will not be allowed to import the trophy back to the states without the CITES permit! Of course you already knew that, but there are others here who may not! GOOD LUCK, and the answer to your question is HELL YES!! ....Mac >>>===(x)===> MacD37, ...and DUGABOY1 DRSS Charter member "If I die today, I've had a life well spent, for I've been to see the Elephant, and smelled the smoke of Africa!"~ME 1982 Hands of Old Elmer Keith

Although it is generally recommended that you get the CITES permit before you go, it does not have to be obtained before you go. The permit allows for the legal importation of your trophy, not the killing of it. Just be careful with expiration dates and be prepared to renew the permit if needed. My advice generally is that If the chance is good for a leopard- get the permit before, if not, wait and see or you could be out $100. Also do whatever the PH says as some want a copy of the permit before the hunt. Oh yeah, regarding your question- if you can pay for it, Yes SHOOT IT!

Yes, You do! This was the first afternoon of a 13 day hunt in SW Zimbabwe. We only went to this area to hang a new bait. This fellow was too busy watching a sick eland cow to notice us...but we noticed him. It was the PH's 81st leopard and the first he had ever had taken in broad daylight. I spent a few evenings and mornings in a leopard blind back in 1980 in Zambia so it's not like I never got to hunt one "proper" before. Rich Elliott Rich Elliott Ethiopian Rift Valley Safaris

Rich: It looks like your leopard is one that would be referred to as a mountain leopard rather than a savannah leopard, as Wayne Grant points out in his book: "Into The Thorns". It has the dark and sometimes solid rosettes on it. What a beauty!

In nine trips to Africa I have seen one non baited leopard. It was a small presumed female going about 75MPH away from us at a water hole. Odds are only slightly better than hitting the lottery IMHO Don't worry about looking. Your tracker will see it first anyway and you will probably have to shoot from the truck so wrestle with that moral issue first. Ask if any of the small cats are available. I've had much better luck stumbling across them.

Since alot of leopard hunters are not successful its not uncommon to have a permit or two left at the end of the season. Shoot it and then apply for your cities as soon as you get back. You should have your permit before its ready to export.

Use Enough Gun, Not really familiar with this mountain leopard business. The cat I shot in Zim. was in ther Matopos Hills. Now the leopard you see below lived at 8,000 plus feet. Now that should qualify as a Mt.leopard no matter what shape his spots are. The leopard there are pretty unsofisticated. We see them regularly in the daytime. Nope, I'm only 26, but saw Arlo Guthrie play in Guthrie, Texas (named after Woody Guthrie "this land is your land")several years back. Our ranch is only an hour's drive from there. I had no idea who he was before I went, but my dad was a DJ in the early 70's (has quite the record collection), and he was a fan. Made me listen to Alice's Restaurant I don't know how many times.
