To bad i sold my ruger m77 in 338 years ago. I now have a browning bar safari semi auto 338 in a bell and carlson 2piece stock and the barrel has been cut to 18 inches. The rifle is a pleasure to carry and shoot and fits just right on the ATV. I have yet to put my load through a chrony. Hears my question, am looking for a rifle to handle coastal grizzlys( Brown bears) i am looking at the winchester safari express or the classic stainless in 375, like the bolt actions and mauser typoe extractors for dangerous game. Is the 375 a better choice i have been told that the 338 can do everything the375 can do. But i think the 375 is a bit more powerful . I do reload What do you guys think. I ask because i have not yet taken game with the 338 , and wanted some opinions from you guys with experience. Thanking you guys in advance Dave

Tanoose, when in doubt just pick up a .416 Remington in a model 70 and your set for coastal browns or Africa's finest. It does a bang up job with a 350 grain Swift A Frame going towards your bruin.

This is a question that comes up all the time and it amazes me as to why...

For the most part in DGR rifles, the bigger case that holds the most powder and the heavier bullets are more powerfull, than a smaller case and smaller bullet...thats a given and for some reason many just cannot accept that fact, the big dog get the bone.

That said, the 338 with a 300 gr. RN Woodleigh is an awsome round on big ugly stuff, but the 375 with 350 gr. RN Woodlighs is the real wacker! At any rate your armed well enough either way you go.

I have a Winchester Classic Stainless in 375 H&H and love it. It shoots Remington Safari Grade ammo with the 300 grain Swift A-Frame into 3/4 inch groups day in and day out. I have it topped with a Leupold 1.75X6 in Tally mounts. Several of my friends have the same rifle, and it shoots the Remington Safari ammo no worse than 1 inch groups in any of them. I would suggest replacing the factory recoil pad with a decelarator type pad. It really helped to make it more pleasant to shoot. I'll be taking this rifle to Africa for the 4th time the end of this month.

I knew I would have to get a bigger rifle than the 300 win mag, but I couldn't decide which one. I shied away from the 375 H&H as it was the "big gun" that most everybody had. I didn't really want what everybody else had. On my PH's reccomendation I ended up buying a 375. Now I know why everybody has one. What a great round. Go anywhere do most anything. It is not the best woodchuck round nor I understand for elephant. But deer on up it seems like the ticket. The 338 is a great round too but not legal in much of Africa. That may or may not be a priority now but most big game hunters eventually get a yearning for the African big stuff. With the 375 you will be ready. In the mean time you will have time to get to use it for most other hunting and be intimately familiar with the 375 prior to facing mbogo or ingwe. I have hunted deer, nilgai, and eland with the 375 with no complaints. Hopefully cape buff next year and grizz the year after. Good hunting. "D"
