Why do Red Duiker command such high trophy fees in South Africa ? Do outfitters need a permit to shot one? If so are they limited? Last time I hunted Nayala in South africa we saw 4-5 Red Duiker a day.

Robert,

The Red Duiker is (i) scarce and (ii) limited in geographic distribution (iii) an art to hunt.

Of the 20 Hunting Outfitters in South Africa that I personally regard as honest and good operators [those I regard as "real opposition", and not fly-by-nights, with whom I think it is prudent to compare my prices] only 7 list red duiker, and the average trophy cost of these is $ 1050.

Andrew McLaren Safaris cannot offer red duiker directly or without some difficulty, so this is not a marketing effort. Just my opinion on your question.

In good hunting.

Andrew McLaren.

I think a lot a lot of landowners perceive the species as very rare - because they don't see then very often, they assume they're not there - the truth is that they are, but stay well hidden....... I've found the best way to get a true idea of population densities is to call them in various locations.

A couple of years ago I asked a KZN landowner why he didn't have them on his trophy list and he told me because they were extremely rare on the property. He'd been there umpteen years and only ever seen one...... I took him out with a caller for a few hours and showed him about half a dozen........

I agree with you about cost though - they are overpriced.......

Could you elaborate on how you "call" a Duiker? Would calling another species of Duiker work?

Believe it or not, I use an ordinary predator call. It works a treat on all the duikers and bushbuck etc.......If you do it right, they often come running in......

Russ,

You may wish to just check your figures.

While 28" for Nyala is about 97 % of the Roland Ward minumum, the 4" for red duiker is 160 % of the minimum for this species!

Maybe you got a bit mixed up with red and grey duiker?

In good hunting.

In Mozambique we can offer them quite a bit cheaper.

Red duiker $650
Suni $650

These can be added to any 7 day plains game hunt there which goes for $400 per day.

According to Mammals of Africa, 3" is representative and 5" is the record. This is all academic as you can't judge them anyway...no time, obscured by hair and brush usually.

Daily rate on our Zululand hunts is $195 self-catering, $300 fully catered.

We offer Red Duiker for $750 plus a government tax of $160 in Mozambique as well as Blue, Grey, Suni & Oribi - and these may be taken on any hunt. The forest areas are superb for these little guys. The trackers call them for us by making the calls - no tools. It is quite something to experience.
