Hyena devours 75-year-old grand ma By Arusha Times Correspondent From The Arusha Times A 75- year- old woman was killed and her grand son injured in a ferocious attack by a hyena in Kiteto district, Manyara region. Reports from the area said the beast attacked the duo at Msakasaka village around 7am on Tuesday February 8th, this year. Police sources said the seven- year- old Toronge Jackson struggled to save her grandmother Melami Ngarabasi as the beast attacked them. His efforts proved futile as the beast killed the old granny and injured him on his arm. He has since been admitted at a hospital. An eyewitness Daudi Lengireyo said the woman was killed when she went out of her house to look for firewood in a neighbouring hut. Apparently the beast had camped outside the cattle boma and attacked the old woman and consumed some of her body parts. Neighbours rushed to the scene only to find her already dead and the young boy writhing in pain from the attack on his arm. According to Lengireyo, the hunt for the killer animal proved futile as it had disappeared into the nearby bush. The district medical officer Dr.Godson Kato said the woman died of excessive bleeding from wounds inflicted on her body. Hyena attacks are common in Manyara region, particularly during the rainy seasons when wild animals move closer to human settlements. Nearly a dozen deaths from attacks by the animal have been reported to the authorities in the region in the last two years.
