http://www.huntingreport.com/w...te.cfm?articleid=705 Tanzania’s Extended Hunting Season In Limbo (posted February 27, 2015) If you are preparing to board a plane to Tanzania to hunt in March, call your operator before doing anything. The Hunting Report has learned that the extended season, which was supposed to start January 1st, has remained on hold until the order authorizing it is signed by the Attorney General of Tanzania. The order was announced and signed off by Minister of Natural Resources and Tourism Lazaro Nyalandu at the end of 2014 as part of the ministry's anti-poaching plan. The extended season would make it possible for safari operators to remain in the field longer, thus maintaining a presence in remote places where poachers could otherwise operate in isolation. According to in-country sources we checked with, there are both political and conservation-related reasons for the Attorney General's refusal to sign the order. There are some in Tanzania who question whether hunting should take place during the time of year when animals are breeding and also fattening up for the dry season. Of course numerous other destinations around the world, including all of North America, has allowed hunting during and around the breeding seasons, or the rut, without deleterious effects to wildlife populations. The same is true of the period when game is eating to prepare for winter. The extended season was to run through March 31st and use leftover quotas from 2014. With the end of convention season, a number of hunters scheduled for a March safari are currently in Tanzania unable to go hunting until this impasse is resolved. If the order is signed in the coming days, The Hunting Report will issue another email bulletin. - Barbara Crown, Editor-in-Chief Get important news bulletins like this sent directly to your email 24 hours before anyone else sees them, plus unlimited access to our database of hunt reports and past articles, a special expanded electronic version of our newsletter and more!
