this "Trick" has been in use for some time, it's a way to get you to pay "something" when they put you in a bind, as in "Sir, your proof of ownership has expired"...which is BS as the 4457 does not expire, ever, and the date has to do with the print version date, it's not an expiration date at all. There are 4 ways to deal with it:e 1. Use a service (which is just another form of bribery) 2. Pay the bribe 3. Get a new form, preferably one without any date on it, or white out the date and make photocopies of the form. 4. Hunt Zim or Namibia and check firearms through. I met a guy in Zim once who explained a tactic for dealing with low level African officials who are trying to put you on the spot. He characterized these people's brains as a mouse balancing on a cork pulling strings to operate the body, or something similar. If you throw them a curveball they don't understand, the mouse falls off the cork and their brain goes into tilt mode. The example he gave was declaring a satellite dish as a chicken feeder. Or in this case, pointing out that the signature date is later than the "expiration date". Or write a current date over the customs stamp and point that out. When the brain goes into tilt mode you have won.
