What do you guys think about hunting leopards with hounds? If I am opening a can of worms, I am sorry. I am co-hosting a TV show now, and we are always looking for hunts that aren't the norm, but if this is thought of as unethical, I don't want to do it. I never thought I would like a bear hunt with dogs until I did it, and the bear turned to fight 5 times. It was exciting, and I shot my bear at 6 yards with a bow.

Just curious. If you guys know of anyone reputable that does this type hunt, I would love to get some contact info, as web searches turned up basically nothing. Thanks in advance. I read this forum every day - though I post very little...TH

Tim,

Barrie Duckworth's Mokore Safaris does several of these hunts every year on the Save Conservancy in Zimbabwe. They are very successful and are just that cats meow for some hunters. If I can provide further info please feel free to contact me anytime.

I was on a hunt with Nico Louren in 2001 for leopards with hounds. Nico has a small ranch in South Africa, but hunts leopards in Zim and other countries. It's a lot of work. You may have to chase after the hound for miles. Last I talked to him his sucess was still at 100%. Nico is a very hard working PH. I have seen him with some dificult clients and he will go out of his way to make sure everyone is happy.

Theo Bronkhorst of Bushman Safaris in Zim hunts with dogs very successfully. Has a good pack and is a very good PH. Some BIG Leopards. I've hunted with him many times. I really prefer Leopard from a blind but some don't like hunting over lights. Each to their own. I'm not physically fit enough to keep up with the dogs. Never have been. I know Nico and he is a good houndsman also with a good pack.

I understood that leopard with dogs in RSA is not legal unless the leopard has previously been wounded. Is that correct? Also, is it legal throughout Zimbabwe, or just in certain areas - for example, not legal in CAMPFIRE areas?

MacD37,

I have only been to Africa once, so I don't post much because I don't have enough experience to make valuable contributions. When I am not hunting (about 150 days a year), I try to read the forum every day. I have learned a lot from you guys. Thanks.

I just went in and updated my profile. Sorry about that!!!

Thanks again to all who have posted info on this thread.

Thanks Tim for showing us what a profile should be and sharing that info and background, too bad others don't follow suit. I have nothing against hunting with dogs (did it in BC for Couger) but as for Leopard I like the blind deal. As many say here about hunting methods - who is the hunter (dog pack) and who is the shooter?

If you are thinking of making a TV show. The dog thing will give youa lot of action and in most cases the end result is pretty predictable. The baited hunt done the traditional way without artificial light could take longer because you have to wait on the leopard and they can be finicky. Of course if you book a good area with a cat guy you probably will get your cat and the filming will be easy because you will be all set up in a blind. This latter method is my personal choice and it has worked for me 3 times.

This summer I'll be on my third leopard hunt. The first two were unsuccessful bait hunts, this will be a dog hunt will Vaughn Fulton. I hope I finally get to see a leopard. Vaughn said hunting with dogs is exciting. I can’t wait.

Yes, it is generally ilegal to hunt leopard or any other game (except birds) with dogs, unless wounded. However, you can apply for an exeception to this rule, especially if the cat is a problem.

Thank you Mr. Herald! The fact is I like to know who I'm talking to, on a public forum,
when the subject happens to be in the contraversial area of hunting. I'm sure you are aware of the Antis who pose as hunters on hunting forums, and want to talk on subjects that are contraversial, even amoung hunters themselves. With that in mind you can see why I was reluctant and replied as I did. Roll Eyes

On the subject of Leopard over dogs, IMO, it is simply another means to the same end, and no worse, nor better than any other way. I see nothing bad in hunting anything with dogs, in fact, I had a large string of Black & Tans, and Walker hounds that I hunted Bear, and Lion in New Mexico with a few years ago, and I loved it. For filming, however, may I make one suggestion?
Most films I've seen filmed around dogs and big game, it seems they make it look too easy. The Antis love to make any hunting look like fish in a barrel shooting. As you well know there is nothing easy about staying with a pack of dogs on a hot trail. Addtionally, the danger to the dogs grows quickly unless you get to the bay as early as is possible. I say don't cut out the fall that skins your elbow, or the sweat that will run down your face, from keeping up in the hot persuit. When you talk the hunt over, at the kill, explain some of the difficulties of this type of hunting rather than only the efectiveness of your latest pair of boots some sponsor gave you to test. This type of thing cuts the Anti's crap in half, and will send him some dud ammo for his write-up of your film.
Because of the missinformation from the press/antis, everyone in the world thinks the leopard is near extinction, and outside the snow leopard this is absolutely not true. Those things are like Coyotes, they can live any, and everyplace, and thrive!

I'm sure none of the things I'm telling you are a suprise to you, but they are, to many of the young guys who read here, and if stories are to be repeated, lets have them give the truth, not the crap the ANTIs want to spread. thumb

Good luck on your hunt, and film, I look forward to seeing it! beer

Hello, I have just returned from Africa with one of our clients that took an old tom cat. This is with Norman Crooks of Pro Safaris.
This particular cat was taken on the sixth day of the hunt. Baits are hung and just as in a blind hunt. If fresh tracks of a big male are found they are followed and at some point a decision is made to release the hounds.
On this particular hunt the leopard took us on quite a cross country track over several mountain peaks even after we heard his growls. He finally bayed in a small tree.
Norman is certainly expert on cats and is very successful with blind hunts as well. He takes several BIG leopard out of the West Nicholson area of Zim every year.
