I know well the issues with the Hornady Interbond bullets and their piss poor performance on thick skinned game, but what is the word on the Hornady solids? Any issues that have emerged based on their use on thick skinned game? I like their .458 Win Mag load with a 500 grain bullet at 2260 fps (realizing there would be a little drop off for a shorter barrel) but looking for some opinions on the solids that they use in this round.

Mike, As you know, they worked fine for me on buffalo. It will be interesting to see if anyone out there has experience using them on elephant.

Are you talking about the old ones or the more recent brass color ones?

The only comparison that I have is the difference between the Speer AGS solids and the brass colored Hornady's.

The Hornady always go about 50 to 75 fps faster than the Speers with the same amount of Varget. Why, I have no idea.

Not sure if this is what you are looking for.

At one time the Hornady's were dirt cheap, but have jumped in price for some reason. I thought they were discontinuing the brass ones anyway.

My son used the 416's on buff without any problems, though I really don't believe in solids on buff. The PH insisted when I was out of sight! Smiler I don't see much use for them on elephant with the Barnes and North Fork solids readily available.

Will,

I was referring to the brass colored ones. That is what they are using for the Heavy Magnum loads that they sell.

The NF are great bullets but they are a bugger to get to feed. The Barnes are simply too long with the .458 Win Mag.

Mike,

There are horror stories floating around about the Hornady brass colored solids. I don't know if they are true.

Since the Speer AGS solids have been discontinued, if it were me, I'd use the 500 gr. Woodleighs.

I used Hornady solids on my water buffalo hunt last year,i was warned by members here not to use them.

The solids did the job,as you can see lead coming out the back of the bullet can't be good.

Hunting Buff last year in Tanzania, my hunting partner used the brass coloured Hornady solids.

The bullets bent like bananas on hitting bone. The Barnes X however performed brilliantly.

MJines,

Hornaday is switching back to their old style steel jacketed solids. I've heard reports like Edmac's. I believe that is why Hornaday is switching back. When the swtch will be complete through their line and old inventory gone I don't have a clue.

I've used North Fork 450gr flat nose solids and 500gr Woodleigh steel jacketed solids out of my 458 for elephants. The North Forks are phenominal. The Woodleighs will get the job done.

My North Fork load produces 2190fps, mild load. The Woodleigh load produces 2135fps, mild to midlin' load. Both work. H 4895 for the North Forks, AA 2230 for the Woodleighs.
