I would never predict Africa, the tribal mindset just does not coinside with Western culture. Ray Atkinson Atkinson Hunting Adventures 10 Ward Lane, Filer, Idaho, 83328 208-731-4120 rayatkinsonhunting@gmail.com

Just more proof the socialism never works - it usually leads to despotism. If you are going to carry a big stick, you've got to whack someone with it at least every once in while.

Well when it does blow,(if ever) it will be interesting to see what the Chinese do... They have been "investing" millions into Zim political structure and other African on the edge nations since 2002.. As usual, the new Govt. will just be more of the same, specially due to the Chinese backing.. MopaneMike

Probably not until western food and resources quit being given to the locals and they begin to blame Brother Bob for their problems. Unfortunately, the good hearts in the west help perpetuate the status quo.

I don't have any expertise in the field, but these are my thoughts after some limited time in country and talking with folks who have knowledge about the problem and a stake in the ultimate outcome. Never. There are not enough whites, let alone enough even slightly inclined to the violent overthrow of the government, left in the country to take any action that could not be crushed immediately. Also, the blacks don't seem to demonstrate enough intestinal fortitude to take any aciton to better their lot and would rather stave to death on their knees at the hand of a mad man than to either screw up the courage or admit their failures at replacing an effective, but somewhat oppresive, white regime with a totally ineffective and horribly oppressive black regime. If that is total freedom and self determination, I suppose it is better to have it and starvation and privation rather than relative prosperity and second class status. They only dust ups I can see happening are some brief, if not very bloody, infighting amoung the guys or girl who takes over once Mugabe is gone. Perry

From my birth and past life in Africa and my present life outside the place, there is ONLY one thing I will say ... The more things change the more they stay the same Cheers, Peter

One can never say never, but our domminant tribe, the shona are the most peaceful cowards in the world. They have never worked out that it may be better to die on your feet than live on your knees. The Matebele may once have been inclined to get upset, but they are only 20% of the population. Also, we have had 42 years of natural selection against doing anything. Any time a black fellow decided he didn't like the current government - or the previous one - somebody shot him. This week we have seen the price of a 10kg bag of mealie meal go from Z$3,500 to 42,500. A one way buss ticket from town to the high density suberbs go from 8,000 to 20,000. - and everybody has just taken it. Bearing in mind that the minimum wage is Z$93,000 per month (ie US$3.50) and that even semi skilled workers are controlled by government to a maximum wage of Z$90,000 per week... ie- if you have a good job in industry you can no longer afford to take a buss to work it would cost you almost half a weeks wage per day! A policeman (or teacher) can no longer aford school fees at any of the better government schools (fees Z$1.2 million per term and a policeman makes Z$400,000 per month...

Even if Zim does explode, one cannot have much confidence that things will improve all that much in the post-Mugabe aftermath. To paraphrase The Who: "I'll tip my hat to the new constitution, Take a bow for the new revolution, Smile and grin at the change all around, Pick up my guitar [or DGR] and play, Just like yesterday, Then I'll get on my knees and pray, We [or they] don't get fooled again. Meet the new boss . . . Same as the old boss." On the other hand, it can't get much worse, can it? God forbid! Mike Wilderness is my cathedral, and hunting is my prayer.

I actually don't think it will explode. My guess is that Mad Bob will eventually die or lose power and then a new Government will step in and try to improve things...... and if they don't, then I think the UN will step in and try to do it for them. How long it'll take or whether they'll ever try to get the white farmers back to boost the economy etc is anyone's guess.(let's hope they do!) - Of course, it goes without saying that it'll take a considerable time.

Magabee has made arrangments for his protoge to assume his place after his death, but this could start a civil war, easy to do in Africa as tribal instinct is strong, especially when the enemy is weak and unarmed. I suppose that is the worst scenario... China rules Zimbabwe/Magabe under a cloak of aid....They swing a big stick over there. Hungry people will sooner or later rebel, that is a given, but to what extent, In Africa its usually with a Panga on poor villagers because some chief armed them with foriegn weapons and said do it. Child soldiers are easy to incite in Africa. That is what I see as possibities, but in fact, I don't really have a clue what will happen in a 3rd world tribal society, they don't think like we do, they live life one day at a time with no thought to tomorrow, regardless of their education or status in world politics. Who knows! I just hope the US keeps their nose out of it, the last time they took a hand, they got the white gov. boosted out of RSA, and its been turmoil every since. Apartied made some mistakes, but correcting them would have been a much better arrangment IMO. China may currently have a lot of economic sway with the mugabe regime, but they can't put troops on the ground in any effective way.
