I am thinking of going hunting next year in the Kalahari Desert for lion. My father would go also, to film.
I would take my .378 Weatherby Mag. I know a lot of PH's do not like the Weatherby's. However, I have taken the gun the last few times to Africa and I am comfortable with it. I am looking for recommendations on ammunition for it for the lion hunt.
My dad would probably take his .300 Weatherby Mag for his gun, while he is filming. Any recommendations for ammo for that as his back up gun.

retreeverSince you like the velocity of the 378 take a North Fork 300 gr and at 25 or 2600 FPS will really open up and do alot of damage...It will stop simba...

Blair338/378I'd try the Woodleigh Weldcore Round Nose soft or the Rhino 350 or 380 solid shank.........they will give rapid set up and still hold together..............
And 200 or 220 in the above bullet makes, for your dad's 300 WBY

L. David KeithI used 300 grain Swift A-Frames on Lion and have no complaints. Don't know of any PHs in the Kalahari that backup with anything under .375 on Lion. I wanted to take my .300 RUM but was told no. I agree with their logic. There are some giants up there. Good hunting, David

Scott450A .300 anything will not be effective as a back up for Lion!If anything goes wrong with the lion it will be fast and at close quarters, stopping power doesnt kill but it buys time and a .300 will not slow a lion down much at all. Swift A frame and trophy bonded bearclaws will be great with the .378 - if you are spending the money on a lion hunt why not get someone like superior ammo to custom load you some rounds and reduce the loads to .375 H&H velocities? You really dont need the extra velocity of the .378

My disclaimer notwithstanding, from everything I've read, seen & heard, cats hate velocity, so I still say go with the 378 in "Zone Five" burner. jorge

I also have a .378 Weatherby Magnum that I used in Africa and for Nilgai in Texas. I use 300 grain Swift A-Frames loaded by Superior Ammunition. They are consistant performers on game and I trust them. I have also received some strange looks when I pull out a Weatherby out of its case during sighting in Africa. PH's being a polite buch of guys don't say much about it. Most have told me that as long as you can shoot your rifle well, and are comfortable with it, they don't care what you use.

AfricanHunterAs I read this list of postings, I got to wondering about this issue. How many of the posters have used a .378 Wea. on lion? I did and it was before the current crop of bullets were on the market. It sure killed a big lion as dead as they can be dead.

I never shot anything with a 378 BEE, let alone anything in Africa, but I can't see why a 300gr Partition at 2900 fps would not do the trick on lion...

Not sure about the Rhinos..
From the recovered bullets I've seen, the Rhinos open up like a propeller
And the extra weight will slow the 378 down a tad.......

MotorCityThanks for all the input. I will know in the next couple weeks if I am going and then will have to make the final decision.
I have been shooting .378 for about 20 years now, that is the first time my dad went to ZIM. I do not think it kicks that hard. It is left handed and I shoot right handed. Never had a problem. If I go back it will be it's 6th trip back.

AtkinsonThe velocity of the .378 Wby is your biggest enemy, it can destroy the integrity of most .375 bullets that are designed for 2500 FPS..
The best solution for that speed demon is a monolithic hollow point, I prefer the GS Custom bullets on that count and I know they work..
The new Barnes bullets might also be a good choice, but I have not used them or seen them used in the .378 or .375 Wby magnums.
I have observed Saeeds .375 on a .404 case and its close enough to a .378 to make a judgement on. He shot a lot of animals, as did his guests, with that caliber and it worked like a charm in every case..Saeed used a monolithic HP of his own making, but as I recall he has used many Barnes X bullets in the past.
