The Briton being held in Cameroon on trumped-up murder charges has had a positive turn of events, though things are not finalized.

According to the French law, used in CAR, you are guilty until proven innocent. Be glad if you do not live in such a country.

Africa, where civility is but a very thin veneer.

why live there?

It's nice country--
and that Brit has probably invested quite a bit of interpersonal learning and development of many friends and relationships if he speaks Sango, and presumably French.

Sounds like this is not as resolved as CAWA posted.

Got an e-mail from Emily this morning. She says everything is finalized. All declared innocent and released from jail to get ready for the upcoming season.
Something very wrong with a legal system that jails people on suspicion while they complete an investigation lasting several months. Thank God I live in the good 'ol USA. All I have to tolerate here is "hope and change".

napoleonic law is the standard in any country that has spent time under french rule, including our neighbor mexico. have a traffic accident in mexico and unless you have mexican auto liability insurance, you and the other driver are both going to jail until the cops figure out who is at fault- unless the other driver is mexican, in which case he will probably go home and you go to jail. i have personally seen this happen-but a bribe sorted things out and my friend was released on "bond". napoleonic law is a real mess.
