Thanks, RIP and Nickudu for an interesting read. Seems like this article must be from the early to mid-1970s.

I would have liked to know what George Taylor's data indicated about elephant weights. It's frustrating to be told that elephant don't weigh as much as some have said, but then not be told the results of Taylor's field experience in weighing them.

Also, I'm not sure what bullets Taylor is referring to when he criticizes American "sharp-pointed" 300 grain .375 solid bullets. Spitzer solids in .375 caliber? I've never seen one of those.

Thanks again.

Thanks!! I really enjoyed the read. Seems I read that years and years ago -- more exciting now than it was then! The thing that makes me pretty sure it was this article was referring to the 2nd elephant in an encounter as an "askari." At the time, I still didn't know much about cartridges, and this article held a blizzard of them.

jdberunz, Don't know if you tried it -- clicking on the small pics takes you to a link with blow-ups... (you didn't say exactly what the problem was, so just kicking in the suggestion).

Mrlexma:

The "sharp pointed 300 grain solids" referred to are old style Winchester Western .375 H&H solids.

They were basically full metal jacket loads. They were constructed of a thin gilding metal skin over a lead core and had a pointy slightly bluff nose.

They consistently blew up on bone, veered way off course when the metal sheath distorted the lead core, etc. Needless to say, they were not in the league of todays monolithic and bonded core solids.

I am pretty sure this style was offered in .375 H&H only and not .458 WM during the late 1950's through the 1970's. Don't quote me on the dates.

Regards,

RCG

Thanks RCG, but would you call those W-W bullets "sharp-pointed"?

I do hope Mr. Taylor wasn't using Silvertips!

Excellent information. Thank you. It would seem Taylor had the same nerve of steel as Keith reportedly had. I don't know I could have crouched and waited for a PO'ed elephant to present a second or third opportunity with nothing but an '06 in hand.
Great stuff,
Frank

I remember reading that article, and thinking at the time, what the heck is a 10.75,in the pic,and going out and buying the first 458 I could find, always wanted that 500 Boswell, he seemed to favor it over all others

RIP and Nickudu,

Thanks again for another fantastic piece.

Now, if only we could get more writers who could write as well as this today - yes, we have Ross Seyfried but to a man other writers lag somewhat in my opinion.

Thanks and best wishes again!

I was unable to read the article. Seems when I clicked on it nothing would come up in the larger box but the little red 'X'.

I did see this article today on the Fox News website:

Bbear - Oftentimes, this problem results from one's security or firewall settings.

It could be an effect of your pop-up blocker (if you have one). Large graphics boxes can be viewed as ads by your software.
