I am looking for a buffalo hunt wihtin the next 2 years or less including plains game after the buff for my wife and I and she does not hunt but would like to photo and be relatively comfortable and feel safe during the hunt. Am a very experienced hunted who does not smoke or dip and is not a drunk and am looking for a hunt to do once as will not be able to do it again. I do not need a trophy animal but we want the once in a lifetime experience in Africa before we die and/or unable to do it again. There should be plenty of planning time unless something is available this year. References required and will be checked extensively. Very best regards to all, Marc Arnold, PE.

That won't happen. My wife often reminds me of my promise when I went the first time - each time I tell her I'm going again, she says, "I thought your first trip was a once in a lifetime" Good for me, I have one of the most, if not the most, understanding wives on the planet - she would have to be to have lived with me for 21 years.

As for your question, there are many options. The problem is, the best areas for free ranging buff are not always the best area for plentiful plains game. For a good compromise, I would suggest Zimbabwe and probably Martin Pieters in the Omay area. I think in those areas he'd able to get you on a good buff and some really diverse plains game.

DON'T DO IT! You will be forever cursed! You will be having a simple, sane conversation with a rational person and suddenly you will get a glazed look in your eyes and will begin talking about Africa. You will suddenly conclude that purchasing a big bore makes sense because you may go on an elephant hunt some day. Suddenly double rifles won't seem so ridiculously expensive. You will begin to think that Will's posts make sense. You will be lost forever. The only hope for you will be that your wife will be similarly affected, but than it will only cost you more. SIT DOWN, HAVE A DRINK AND TAKE UP GOLF< TENNIS OR FLY FISHING INSTEAD, IT MAY BE TOO LATE ALREADY. On second thought, forget fly fishing, I hear fly fishing for tiger fish is awesome.

I would recommend myself for a once in a life time experience.

Joking aside if you are looking for the best that Africa has to offer then Zambia is hard to beat at the moment, it boasts on array of plains game species and in good concentrations. It is a stable and friendly country.

It would be interesting to know of what other animals you are looking at?

Could you consider lets say a Sable and Buffalo safari?

Yes some may have more buffalo but you could end up hunting in a communal area. Depends what you want?

Does the camp have scenic views over one of Africa's famous rivers. Is the area remote and uninhabited by man? Are you in big game country? Will you hear the music of Lion and hyena at night etc.

Andrew.

Some very important questions one must ask if they want a great safari experience, in particular if you think this will be the "one and only".

Marc

The Luangwa is my favorite safari destination in Africa. The atmosphere along the river just perfectly fits my picture of what a safari destination should be.

Engineer, I made my first trip to Africa in 1983, at the age of 24. After that, I went back on two more safaris, in 1986 and 1989. After that, a lot of things intervened in me making a 4th trip, until 2009. For the first half of my 2009 trip, the only thing I could think about was "Why the hell did you let all those things get in the way of you coming back?" At that very moment, I vowed to never let a bunch of years go by without getting back there again. Finances are tight right now so I won't be going back real soon, but not a single day goes by that I don't think about getting back to Africa as soon as I can, and working to put the funds together to do just that. Come hell or high water, I'll be hunting again on the dark continent by 2013, one way or another.

You will not go just one time. And, if you try to, you'll be a frustrated man down the road.

Marc,

In 1994 we did what was supposed to be our one and only safari in Zim (that was eight trips ago). We were hunting on a ranch for leopard/plainsgame and had a great hunt. Not until a few years later when we were in a "Big Game Concession" did we realize what we missed.

Elephants blocking the road and bluff charging the vehicle, lions roaring at night, and hippos grunting.

Regardless of the country you choose, I would suggest an area where you and your wife will share these experiences. Both of you will come away with memories that will last a lifetime.

Best of luck on your search and hunt.

I'd suggest along the Luangwa in Zambia or Masailand bordering the Tarengarie - Adam Clements or Luke Samaras.

In Zambia you have two options. The hot thorn and thicket of the Luangwa or the clear water rivers and parkland of the Kafue.

Personally, I cannot get enough of both.

I would recomend Terry Anders and Savuli Safaris in the Save Conservancy. Terry is a superb PH, extremely well mannered and runs a great camp that is well equipped, safe and comfortable
