I have a plainsgame hunt coming up soon and I will be hunting

Kudu
Oryx
Zebra
Bushbuck

I am taking a 338 Win Mag and a 300 Win Mag.

Currently for the 300 Win Mag I have loaded 200 grain Nosler Partitions and 180 grain Barnes MRX's.

I have also loaded 225 grain partitions for the 338 Win Mag. The question is what would you guys recommend for another load for the 338 based on the game I will be hunting. I am looking at using the 338 as my primary gun and the 300 will be my backup.

The 225 grain partitions will be all that is necessary. Concentrate on accuracy for well placed shots. I had great success with the Barnes triple shock in 180 grain .300 Win Mag. Five one shot kills with great bullet performance in RSA. Good luck.

On my two trips to Africa I used a .338 as my primary rifle. On the first trip I shot 225 grain TSXs, while 225 grain Hornady Interbonds served on the second. Both bullets did very well, which leads me to believe you'll have no trouble with the 225 grain Partitions. If you have to try something different, give NABs or HIBs a shot.

You won't have any trouble with the Partitions. The TSX would be my second choice especially for tougher animals. They'll both work great.

I did work up a load for the 338 with the 250 grain Hornady Spire Point but I wasn't sure if it was a "tough" enough bullet for the game I was going after.

Hey sniper, I know that if you loaded the MRX you have shot some of them. Tell me how you liked them accuracy wise. Also what was your load recipe and velosity.

Thanks for the input.

I thought about loading some North Fork 240 grainers but when I called today he was out and did not know if he would have any more before it was time for me to go.

The only animal I was really concerned about was the Zebra. I hear they are pretty tough to bring down even with a well placed shot.

With the exception of the Bushbuck, I've shot all the game you listed with 225 Gr. Partitions from my .338 and it worked great. Just stick with this combination and you'll be fine.

Another vote for the 225 partitions. The 338 with that load is an excellent choice for what you're hunting.I used a 338 win mag in 2005 and took everything from Zebra to Leopard without hitch.

I like one load for each rifle, just makes things simple. I hunted all the animals on your list, excepy Gemsbok, w/ my .338-06 & 210grNPs. The Zebra took 2 shots but that was ny fault not the bullets. Only bullet I recovered was from the kudu, perfectly expanded weighing 168gr. The 225gr NPs in your .338wm are plenty, can't go wrong w/ 250grNPs either. Most of your shots will be under 200yds except for maybe the Gemsbok.

And another vote for the .338 Win. Mag with 225 gr NP for PG. This was superb for me in 04. Had pass-thru penetration on gemsbok, blue wildebeeste, kudu, zebra and some small 'uns.
