Safari Club Conventions
Has anyone been to the Safari Club conventions in both Reno NV and Dallas Tx? How do the two shows compare? I'm thinking of skipping Reno this year and going to the Dallas show istead, but I've heard the Dallas show is much smaller.
Any insights appreciated - thx.

I've been to both. Reno is big, but I believe Dallas is better. Most of the outfitters and agents are at both shows or at least there reps are. Dallas is much better weather as well!

Nothing wrong with the casinos in Reno though.

Dallas is in my future, if nothing more than for a change of scenery and people.

Beware of the $48.00 cab fare from DFW to Dallas (I had a date with a client and a US Attorney at 1100 Commerce last January). My cab drivers name was (I wrote it down) Kaboobi. I was squired in a 1989 Dodge Caravan that had no heat and a metal rod sticking up through the seat. It wasn't the rod of death, the lack of heat or the price or unintelligble attempt at English. It was the smell. Thankfully, my brother is driving in and I can ride with him. Which night is the party at the Comfort Inn?

Hunter308, you do realize the Dallas show is not an SCI event! There is a Dallas chapter of SCI, but the DALLAS SAFARI CLUB is not a part of SCI.

I think you will like the DSC show, with just over 600 booths, it still will take you a couple days to visit them all, even if you only spend a few minutes at each. The admition is only $10 per day, and you can buy tickets at the door. A week end pass is available for $15 for both sat, and Sun. There are several hotels near by, and most have shuttles too, and from D/FW (about ten miles away, or if you fly into Love field on Southwest, it is only about 4 miles from Market hall where the show is held. There are many AR members there every year, and we usually have a dinner at least one night at some local resturante, and a get together in the evening at one of the hotels near by!

I've been to the Dallas show for the last several years and will say they put on a nice show. If a guy doesn't enjoy the Dallas show he is probably operating at room temperature.

You can borrow money, but you can't borrow time. Don't wait, go now.

Hunter308,

I prefer the SCI Convention because most of the outfitters will be there, and I also enjoy the Gunmakers Guild and Engravers Show and the Bladesmiths' Show which are in Reno at the same time.

Reno can be hard to fly into, consider flying to Sacramento and renting a car to motor over to Reno.

I drive up from San Diego.

That reminds me, I need to go book my ticket. Calgary - Denver - Reno, or Calgary - SanFran - Reno... relatively painless. The last three years I failed to visit the two artisans shows, but I'll sure make an effort to do so this year.

Thanks! I didn't realize that. I'm sure the Dallas show is fun, but I think I'll stick with the Reno show then.

H308, I can also tell you this many of the SCI vendors are at Dallas this year first...You will be able to speak to them with a lot of less competition from the crowds at Reno and you will also be around 90 dollars richer each day attending Dallas instead...

Do you have to be a member to attend DSC? I am one but just curious.

You are right on that, and for me living in the Dallas area, I can attend the DSC convention and be about $500 richer each day!

No, you don't have to be a member and the daily entrance fees are the same for non-members and members.

Not to mention the Weatherby Award dinner at the Silver Legacy Hotel on Monday evening.
