I just received a quote and wondered what people think - Crate includes shoulder mount of Imapala - 2 zebera rugs - Waterbuck Skull and hide - Wildebeest skull and hide - Kudu Skull and hide and some small curios. All hides were tanned in Zim. Air freight from Zim to Chicago is 1805.00. The total chargeable wheight is 130kgs (287 lbs). This weight sounds high considering the hides were all tanned. What do think of this charge? Does not include State side charges./

It sounds pretty close to me. The extra weight may be a heavy box to protect your trophies... A day spent in the bush is a day added to your life Hunt Australia - Website Hunt Australia - Facebook Hunt Australia - TV

Matt is right. Finished trophies are usually packed in a much sturdier box than raw skins and skull. That plus the two zebra rugs gets the weight up there quick. I remember a shipper telling me the airlines charge by volume not weight. I am sure weight has to play some role (like shipping lead) but the volume is what dictates the price. Seemed strange, has anybody else heard that before. And to answer the OP question, it is in line with what I have paid in the past.

Yeah this is true - All air freight is priced by volume. I was just looking at an online freight forwarding site just an hour ago, for a quote to send a box 30"x15"x15" from Dallas to Australia it id didnt matter if it was 10lbs or 40lbs - the price was almost the same. For that dimension the quote was based on 41lb, something like that. A day spent in the bush is a day added to your life Hunt Australia - Website Hunt Australia - Facebook Hunt Australia - TV

Just paid 950 for 3 capes and horns. Animals were killed in zim and shipped down and out of rsa. The price your were quoted doesn't look out of line.

Actually, its a great rate. With those trophies, the rate should be around 2200.00. Pay it and get it coming across the pond before they raise the rate.. life member of SCI life member of NRA NTA Master Scorer SCI Scorer for Rowland Ward www.african-montana-taxidermy.com

Now, be prepared to add your own skin to that of your trophies when you get the bill from the "customs broker". If you have the time and live near the port of entry, it pays huge dividends to clear your own trophies.

Those 'customs brokers' havve saved a bloody lot of trophy shipments from disaster!! Prices vary greatly... A day spent in the bush is a day added to your life Hunt Australia - Website Hunt Australia - Facebook Hunt Australia - TV

I paid almost that amount to get one whitetail shoulder mount from the US to South Africa. They told me that volume size of the crate has a lot to do with freight costs. It is important to engage with the shipping agent/broker before the time. Eardley Rudman

For a Zebra hide, cat skin, three Gemsbok skulls, and three miniature antelope shoulder mounts, I paid $750 Windhoek to Vancouver. I then paid $550 (including customs brokerage, CITES, and domestic shipping) to move the crate North of 60.
