If I booked a 2x1 hunt and the other hunter backs out, who is responsible for for paying the extra fees? Hunter or outfitter? I had this happen to me a few years ago and when the final bill came it was for 1x1. I told the outfitter/owner that I booked a 2x1 and sent my deposit and bought a plane ticket. The outfitter agreed and changed it to a 2x1 price and stated that he should have also gotten a deposit from the other hunter.
What do you have to say ?

I guess it depends on how it was sold.

If you were the one who booked it for you and a friend, and were the one doing the contract (ie you were the only one who talked with the outfitter and signed it as a 2x1, with both hunters, then I’d say you were responsible. So if you made the deal for you and a friend, and the friend cancels, you need to collect the difference from your friend.

If both hunters had a contract with the outfitter and paid deposits, and then one backs out, then you deserve to get the agreed on price and the outfitter should deal with the cancellation as long as you wouldn’t object if he found a different guy to take the spot and hunt 2x1 with you…

Most outfits have cancellation outlined in the contract you sign, and thats what gets followed.

Mark

This is a good example of why on a 2x1 that is for 2 friends and not a wife/husband or parent/child I always require a contract from each member of the party. Saves a lot of angst, hard feelings and the operator does not get screwed.

Seems to me that you are in 1X1 territory now, but that truly is for the best. You don't save much on a 2X1 and it's hardly worth that small discount and much more likely to ruin a friendship. Always hunt 1X1. Try to pick up any quota for the cancelling hunter.

^^^ what lavaca and Mark said....

I've only been twice, but I've sent a lot of of folks. and I've hunted elk 2x1 - never again. you can spend a lot of hunt screwin around trying to the get the other guys animal.

control your own destiny - for a just a few hundred bucks? everytime.

My advice if you want to hunt with a friend is to share a camp, but not a PH. As others have said, your buddy makes a bad shot and you lose an entire hunting day trying to recover a wounded animal, vehicle gets stuck, etc. Not a good scenario unless everyone is "very" good friends and old hands at this and don't care if they shoot anything.

The only 2X1 hunt I ever booked was supposed to be a buffalo hunt in the Selous with my son. He has no interest in hunting whatsoever, so it turned into a 1X1.
