After some discussion with my PH, we've decided to do a buffalo hunt in the Tunduru concession of Tanzania. The area is located just south of the Selous and north of the Mozambique border. I've hunted the Selous twice but the Tunduru concession will be new to me. Does anyone have any personal experience with buff hunting in this area? I've got reference info but I thought I would ask here first.

Thanks,

Bull1

I found this information on the following website.

This was taken from:

http://www.gssafaris.com/tanzania_safari_zuka.html

"Tunduru - This concession is adjacent to Muhwesi and is situated on the south-western border of the Selous. The block is 3 500 square miles, and, like Muhwesi, comprises mainly Miombo woodland partitioned by the rivers draining the area. In the north of the area for a towards the Mbarangandu River, the Miombo gives way to large open green areas of inland drainage and a flood plain habitat. The area supports large herds of buffalo as well as a number of "Daga Boys" who reside in the thick riparian forest along the rivers, and which constitute an exciting and challenging hunt. The block also yields very good elephant, leopard and lion each season. Tunduru is primarily a dangerous game block. If you are looking a classic, dangerous game safari in the old style, with plenty of walking, tracking and scouting, then this is the area for you."

Do a search on it. It seems to have historicly had lion problems. Ask Bwanamich, Shakari, or safari12.

Rhyme of the Sheep Hunter
May fordings never be too deep, And alders not too thick; May rock slides never be too steep And ridges not too slick.
And may your bullets shoot as swell As Fred Bear's arrow's flew; And may your nose work just as well As Jack O'Connor's too.
May winds be never at your tail When stalking down the steep; May bears be never on your trail When packing out your sheep.
May the hundred pounds upon you Not make you break or trip; And may the plane in which you flew Await you at the strip.

There's a hunting report from 2002 on this site.

A little old, but glowing none the less.

Thanks Brett. The article from DSC is pretty encouraging. In fact, Zuka Safaris is exactly who I'm hunting with. Even though I would dearly love to return to the Selous for a third trip, I know I'll enjoy being in new territory.

I'm afraid I don't know much about the area except it's probably an open area or a game control area, but bearing in mind it's location, it should be pretty much OK and probably esp good for Elephant. - How long are you going for?

BwanaMich is probably the best guy to give you accurate info.

Shakari...we're going for 10-days. However, we only intend on hunting buffalo. Should the opportunity present itself for an exceptional head of plains game, that would be OK. But our full attention will be on buffalo. I'm excited about the possibilities. Only 244 days to go!

I'm generalising a bit here and as I said, I have no experience of that particular area, but I'd guess the area is probably at it's best for Elephant, however, you should be OK for Buff as well. I'd further guess that the PG might be a bit thinner on the ground and the cats more educated than in the Selous for example.

As I said, BwanaMich would be the best guy to comment.

Keep your eye out for those big ele found in that area between Selous and Niassa.
There are some great fishing lodges on the coast from there if you have a few days spare.

Ain't that the truth - and that entire coastline is fishin' it's head off just now! - I'm told it's the best season they've ever had. Eeker
