If I didn't have a gun I'd be torn between the .375 and the .416 too!!...so here's the deal....If you win it let me know and I'll give you my .404 to take and when you return it's yours if you like it.........for a small fee of course.

Your second gun should be a .300 mag or something.

If you're starting from scratch on such a rifle battery then I'd pick a matching pair of rifles, whether M70, M77/MkII's etc, in 30-06 and either .375 H&H or if you're not bothered by a bit or recoil then a .416 Rem or Rigby...

Since you're going to win, we'll all just wish you luck and hope you have fun! Razzer

My favorite rifle has been a custom 338 that I have had for several years. More recently, I have been shooting a 375. The 338 sort of seems unnecessary in between the 300 Win and 375 H&H. If I were to go to Africa, I think the the 300 Win and 375 would be my rifle choices.

Mr. RiflemanZ,

Take a 338 Winnie and a 416 Remmy.

Further discussion is not needed.

I've got a .470 NE Searcy that is saying prayers in the safe ... it REALLY wants to go to Africa to hunt buff! The CZ in .416 Rigby thinks it's a PERFECT second rifle for that trip.

Got my fingers crossed too thumb

Don't spend a lot of time on this one, actually it is a moot point, in that I am planning to win! I would like to thank you all in advance for your support, as well as our gracious, intelligent, handsome host. Wink

I just happen to have a pair of Merkel double rifles! One is a 140.2, 470NE, for the Buffalo, and the other is a 140.1, 9.3X74R, that I'll have JJ mount a QD scope on, for the smaller animals. Both in a take down TUFFPAK with my shorts, and shirts, and I'm ready for Tanzania. All I have to do now is, win the hunt! clap

I think I would take my RSM 458 Lott and my pre-64 375. I would love to shoot a buff with the Lott, and the 375 could cover both plains game and buff if needed.

If I were you I'd just take a 375 and a Leupold 1.5-5X scope, and spend more time concentrating on where to shoot a buff rather than on which gun.

While I am glad to have my name in the hat I am not going to hold my breath as I am not one of those "lucky people". However, in the event the safari gods smile upon me I will be taking my 375 H&H and my 416 Rigby. Wait a minute, since I dont have to pay for the safari I can buy a double! That being said, I will be taking a Champius 470 and my BRNO 375 H&H!!!!!

When I win the Buffalo hunt I will be taking the same two rifles that worked so well on my first and only trip to Tanzania. For plains game a Model 70 Winchester in .358 STA loaded with 270 grain North Forks at 2850 fps, and Barnes 250 grainers as solids. My Buffalo rifle was another Model 70 in .416 Remington and loaded with North Fork softs of 370 grain with matching flat point solids both at 2450 fps. I could not have asked for better performance. thumb Good shooting.

It all depends on what you will hunt in the future. If you plan several more dangerous game hunts in Africa, I would go with the 416. If you may never get back there I would buy a 375 as you will find many more uses for it here then the 416.

There are a lot of winners out there. So will the real winner just identify himself? I will let anyone use any of my rifles (CZ in 416 Rigby and two Model 70s in 375 H&H and 300WinMag) if they take me as the observer.

I agree that it is a moot point, but I'll tell you which two rifles will be going over there with the winner.

I am going to get my 458 Lott project done (will have to take a loan and send fat check to gunsmith) and then since it is an Enfield I'll take my 35 Whelen AI for the plainsgame loaded up with some 250g. Northforks. A pair of enfields, sweet. I'll post pics afterwards of course.

I'll be taking my Browning Safari rifle in .458WM, loaded with 500 gr. Woodleigh solids. Bought the rifle "cuz it was there", and thought maybe, just maybe, I'd get to use it on buff some day.

Looks like that day has come. Big Grin

Backup rifle will be my Browning Safari .375, in case something goes wrong with the .458.

I suggest that you take a light recoiling rifle for plainsgame, but with enough power to take on a Lion, Buff or even a mad elephant, should the ocassion sping out of nowhere, thus the 375 or 9.3x62 would be my lightest recommendation...

For your Buff etc. take a 416 Rem or larger, as long as you can shoot it.

I don't like anything lighter than .338 Win minimum in Tanzania, and its a tad light in my experience.... I have stumbled on wouned cow buffalo, snare, Lion or bullet wound while hunting plainsgame..

It has happened twice on Saeeds hunts as I recall, a cow Buff in both cases that we stumbled on while hunting bulls, The PH and the client Jim Foster, and Pierres brother in law, PH Richard Lemmer, got skinned up a tad, the other incident I don't recall the details, fortunatly in both cases all were properly armed and difused the situation promptly, and we all had a good time thrashing them for the rest of the hunt...so thats for what its worth, and you may certain bring whatever caliber you wish with us...

A 375 and a bigger bore is always a perfect combo...

AWW, just take a Marlin .45-70, with a mag tube extension so ya got 8 shots with 540 gr. Garrett Hammerheads! Big Grin Then take a Ruger #1 in a .375 H&H, in case ya don't have yer Marlin when ya see a Buff. That way you are TOTALLY politically incorrect for a 2 rifle African Safari jump

Why do you think I'm making haste tuning up the CZ .416? Got safety done, got front sight done. Ejection issue is next. Would I have time to do bedding too.... Frowner

My Sauer 200 in 9.3x62 would complement it just fine. Got 285's Barnes-X loaded up and ready to go.

Depends on how long it takes for the glass bedding to set up!! You have until July 28th, 2006, but some glass won't set up in that length of time I have been told! jump

What did you do to the CZ front sight. I'm trying to find a larger beed for my CZ550 in 458 Lott. Know of any that will slip in?

Well, that sounded better than it is in reality, I still have the factory issue sight, but now a lower version. It required some sanding to get it in. But now it is still the tiny dark (despite the white inside) "bead", that I wouldn't like to rely on when pointing at a big, but equally dark, fast approaching background. Or even a stationary dark background. Don't most here recommend NECG, complete new front sight set-up, so you have more inserts to choose from?

Sorry I gave you hope with my remark.

It'll take until June 2006 for me to build up the courage to do it, then another two weeks before I finally make it to the store, that will obviously not have in stock what I need... do you see the problem evolving? Wink No, July 28th, 2006 isn't all that far away... Frowner
