Have any of you gays or gals hunted the area around Petrusville / Vanderklof Dam - Vaal River?
I understand that the terrain is semi desert, arid with scrubs along the riverbeds.
Shots estimatet to +200 meters according to the outfitter.

I have a plains game hunt booked for May next year, and it is to be split between that area and Limpopo near the Stockpoort border crossing.

Springbuck, black wildebeest and mountain reedbuck at Northern Cape, and waterbuck, zebra, bushbuck, warties and impala on the Limpopo banks.

I have hunted the Limpopo area before, but
any info abouth the Nortern Cape area would be nice.

I've hunted a couple of times near Douglas (outside of Kimberley) where the confluence of the Vaal and Orange rivers is. It's in the Northern Cape. It is semi arid. I think 200 meters is a reasonable estimate of shot distance, though I've taken many animals at closer distances.

The Gemsbok there are incredible. You can reasonably expect something over 40" (I have both a bull and a cow over 40" from that area). There are also good red hartebeast which are not on your list. You might also consider steenbuck.

Bwanna.
Thanks for the info.
We are 4 guys going, two of us has been to RSA before. We plan for an assorted bag between us, but for one of the guys both gemsbok and red hartebeest are on the list.
Other than that we hope to hunt kudu, duiker, steenbook and blesbook.
Impala and warthog will be games of oportunity.
I like to try for those I listed...have taken some of the others alredy.

Was just a bit curious about the landscape and what to expect.

The kudu in the Northern Cape are the cape kudu (just a geographic variation of the southern greater kudu) and typically not as large as the ones on the Limpopo (the standard southern greater kudu). I have shot both, but if a guy is going to shoot only one, it would probably be advisiable to shoot it in the Limpopo.

An unlucky misprint, not intended by any means.

It isn´t alwas so easy to get everything right, when one does not have The Queens English as the primary language.

I was just in the area 2 weeks ago.It was cold and very windy but the hunting was great. It is pretty much treeless,we used dried river/creek beds to make our stalks. Our total was 2 black wildebeeste,3 springbuck, and a nice red hartebeast and a gemsbok.Hunted with Nic Roets safaris. All total we never took a shot over 200yds. except at 1 springbuck and all stalking was done on foot. After 3 days there we left and spent 7 days in the Limppopo.I would rate this as an area I would like to return too one day.
Thanks
Wesley
