Since I just flew back last week, I'll throw some observations out.

No one coming or going weighed my ammunition but Delta asked if the ammo was in original packaging. Air Namibia (in Windhoek) and Delta (in London) asked me if my ammunition was packed in my other suitcase not my guncase.

Mt Tuffpack with my Model 70 Classic Safari Express and my Savage 11GL (Lightweight Synthetic), two padded soft cases, a sweatshirt, a pair of pants two pairs of socks and two T shirts weighed 48.5 Lbs (22 Kilos) at Delta check in.

My other suitcase with 10 Lbs of ammo (60 rounds of 375 and 20 rounds of 300WSM) weighed 37.5 Lbs and my carry on back pack weighed less than 7 Lbs

One more thought came to me....since many of us like to take a shotgun as well as a rifle, it makes sense to consider buying a rifle that one can fit a set of shotgun barrels to.

Budget solution: Valmet/Tikka/FinnClassic 412 and 512 series. The rifle can be had in 9.3x74R and the shotgun in 12 ga. This is one of the few rifle receivers that will take a set of 12 ga bbls. circa $2500
Midrange solution: Chapuis UGEX 9.3x74R with a set of 20ga bbls circa $7500
Upper Midrange: Chapuis AGEX (Brousse or Jungle) in 375 Flanged or 470 Nitro, with a set of 16 or 12 ga bbls. circa $14-24K.

Also Krieghoff, Merkel or Heym can meet this need, but I am not sure they will accommodate anything bigger than a 20ga on their rifle actions. The Merkel for sure, as the double rifle is built on their 20ga shotgun action.

The other plus here is that these takedowns will fit in a much smaller compact case than a bolt rifle plus a separate shotgun.

For those who like to take 2 rifles and a shotgun, then the Valmet really takes the prize, as you can just add a third set of barrels eg a 7x65R or 30-06, or substitute a combo set rifle/12ga instead of the shotgun/shotgun.

Yes, we "pimp" the FinnClassic 512S as well as the Chapuis guns....as someone will no doubt point out. So we are biased here.

And no, this was not the reason I started the thread.

Russ, I am taking my 416 Taylor and a drilling 9.3X72R & 16X16. The pygmy antelope are perfect for the drilling and small antelope such as bushbuck are shot at close range so the old 9.3X72R is just fine. This combo will cover everthing I am planning to hunt from Elephant to Suni.

Piece of advice I received when young was "if you can't eat it, shoot it or detonate it don't carry it!" Made sense then and still does. I don't have the space here to list all that my alice contained prior to my first patrol, suffice it to say I lacked only the proverbial sink!

not giving advice, just sharing a humerous note from the past.
