Poverty drives the poachers and greed drives the middlemen.
From 1989-1993 we had Brit and NZ SAS and US Delta operators deployed alongside us for 'livefire' training. They had all the toys including aircraft fitted ith thermal imaging. (the yanks donated two 337's fited with all the gear to parks by they were appropriated by the zim airforce and crashed...)

The addition of 'professional' troops to supliment us zookeepers certainly increased the number of dead poachers. The donation of good night vision kit after 'desert storm' enabled us to increase our own sucess rates 10 fold.

We lost. Refugees from the gongo would risk their lives for the money an the fact that by the end, it was estimated we were killing 60-80% of the poachers failed to stem the flow.

Wht woul have worked was to have killed 4 indian businessmen in lusaka who were funding the poaching in the north, bumbed off the vice president and the director of Parks who were co-ordinating the poaching in Hwange and the CIA operative and SA military Intelegence chief for Zimbabwe (who also happed to be head of 'parks investigations) who were controling the poaching in gonarezhou. Killing those 8 men would have been a whole lot more effective than 970+ dead poachers.

It's not too late. If, IF, you are willing to make the commitment and deal with the consequences...

Interesting observations Ganyana.
As someone in the article says"
"The long-term answer lies in educating people not to buy these materials". Maybe we should just donate Viagra to all those folks who think that ground up Rhino horn will help them get a woodie.
Peter.

Be without fear in the face of your enemies. Be brave and upright, that God may love thee. Speak the truth always, even if it leads to your death. Safeguard the helpless and do no wrong;

It seems that deliberately misdiagnosing the problem is a common feature of all governments.

The offer was made to help out in Kenya in 1985 but it was turned down.

23 years and still can't remember Rule 1 and Rule 2 for life in uniform, eh mate?

Rule 1: NEVER volunteer.
Rule 2: If it sounds too good to be true, it is.
Cool Just kidding with you mate. No offense meant.

Seriously, I doubt employment with IFAW or WWF would be enjoyable for a new PMC employee who enjoyed hunting. I wonder how their ROE works when they come across licensed hunters? Will IFAW/WWF pay PMC's to "stop animal murder" or "enforce local game law"? What happens when some WWF/IFAW true believer low-level management type finds out you are actually an avid animal killer and therefore part of the "enemy"? Care to fathom who gets thrown under the bus when something goes wrong on an op? How long will the the superlibs enjoy their new relationship with PMC's? I dunno. But the divorce is bound to be very messy.

I agree with Ganyana: poaching is an economic imperative. The profit outweighs the risk, including death. As mentioned, more force will only equal more bloodshed. Without a paradigm shift, the war on poaching will only end when the game runs out.
