Uganda: Cobra Attacks Stubborn Man's 'Loo'

A man who had for years refused to construct a latrine at his home was nearly bitten by a cobra as he attempted to ease himself atop an anthill near his home.

Musoke, 48, of Namuganda sub-county in Mukono district, has for long given local council authorities a headache for refusing to construct a pit latrine.


But on Sunday afternoon, he got the shock of his life as he squatted to ease himself atop an anthill behind his house. A big cobra was sticking its head out to give him the kiss of death.

"I first heard an alarm before I saw him running towards the house pantless," his wife said.

The wife, who has been pushing for the latrine, was all smiles. "The fact that we had visitors when he came running naked taught him a lesson he will live to remember," she said.

She said her husband immediately destroyed the anthill and went to look for casual workers to dig the pit latrine.


Sub-county chief Yusuf Mudde Bugembe said only two percent of the locals had toilets. "We appeal to residents to construct toilets and have given them only 45 days to do so or face arrest."
