Ok guys, just a quick post. The other day we found this most unique elephant. Frankly everyone I have shown it to including seasoned PH's have NEVER seen anything like it. Please let me know if you have and where. This jumbo was in a NP in the Caprivi and no one on staff there knew about it.

We guess the ivory is pushing 48" long exposed, and she appears to be in good health, in fact has a calf in tow. Right tusk is normal and short. Any thoughts appreciated!

Have not seen one physically but should it be of interest, there was something similar floating around on the internet quite recently.

Google "Malaysian elephant with downward tusks" and you will have it.

I seem to remember similar pics (possibly) either in the Cynthia Moss book 'Elephant Memories' or Katy Payne's 'Silent Thunder'.

I was recently talking to an old friend who has many years of Selous experience back in those days & has seen similar forms of of ivory growth (mostly on cows) there.

I once saw a bull in Kruger NP with a wayward tusk, but not as crazy as that one. Let me see if I can find a photo and post it. He was a big, old bull with long, heavy ivory and his right tusk was turned outward.

I can't seem to figure out how to post pictures from my iPad. Can I send the image to someone who can post it? It is a grand, old bull.

Wayne Van Den Bergh has one that goes straight out to the side on his webpage. It certainly isn't as pronounced as the one above.

Here's a video of a Sumatran elephant with both tusks turned backwards.

Thanks all! That Malaysian else is also very special. It was a special find for us to see this jumbo and get some pix, although from afar. Wish we could have gotten closer!
