Kudu Quality in Natal

My fiance and I are likely headed to South Africa for our honeymoon. Fortunately, she was nice enough to agree to some hunting time for me. We are looking at heading to Natal (near Pongola/Lake Jozini) for our trip. I know that the areas around Pongola produce some big nyala but I do not know much about the kudu (quality or quantity) in that area. Anyone with any experience hunting kudu near Pongola/Lake Jozini? What is a reasonable expectation for kudu there?

15 years since I last hunted in that area. Back then, you went up north to shoot a big kudu then drove to natal for nyala. I did see some kudu on the nyala portion of the trip, but the better ones were not any more than 50 inches. It made the 57 I shot up north look pretty good.

Natal has been delivering some good kudu up to 60" the past few years...

Def. one of the top top Greater Kudu areas in South Africa. If you go to a place that is big enough, like 10,000 acres or bigger, you should have a very good chance of getting that magical 60" Kudu.

Taken a 57" on the edge of Jozini, not the norm but there are some big bulls out there -pick your property carefully though as Charl mentioned.

Manyathelo, which outfit were you hunting with? We are looking at Harloo Safaris and they are on the edge of Lake Jozini.

We have done several trips to the Pongola area over the years and have had clients take some wonderful game, including kudu and Nyala.
The lodge below is where we typically stay and is absolutely wonderful accommodations and servcice.

interesting post - when i was in natal some 25 or 30 years ago, a 48" kudu was considered a monster, and very few hunters went home with one

There are moster kudu and nyala in and around Pongola. I was in the Pongola Port area and took a big nyala and a kudu just under 59". If Lake Jozini is low you will see more warthog than you will ever see in your life. MMP
