I don't have any personal experiens with the caliber or plain game, but isn't the STW a bit big? With around 75 grain of slow powder it can't be good to shoot? Just wondering.
What bullet will you use?

Mike,

The 7mm STW will be just great for plains game hunging, especially at the longer ranges.

Johan,

I just used my 3/404 for plains game, and the charge was 90 grains of powder [Big Grin]

Mike,

I don't see any problems as long as you use premium bullets like barnesX or you could always download abit to go around 2450-2500 fps but if you are planning to use it in namibia leave it as is.

Only thing stopping you from using it is bullet failure and as long as you can avoid it I don't see any problems.

Provided you use bullets that won't disintegrate, the 7mmSTW should be fine on just about any plains game (I'd be reluctant to use it on eland or giraffe myself, but I'm sure others would have no problems doing so).

I will use premium bullets, e.g. Fail Safes, Swift A-Frames, or Barnes X. I also plan on working up some loads using solids, so I can use it on the smaller antelope like Klipspringer. [Big Grin]

I shoot a 7mm Dakota & w/ 175gr premium bullets @ 3100fps +, you should be all set for any of the antelope out to 400yds. If Warren Page did it years ago w/o premium bullets, you should do even better.

Fredj338,

Mr.Page used the 175 Nosler Partition Semi-Spit, which is a premium I believe, then and now.

Mikeh375, not a bad choice even today, 7mm STW with a 175 Nosler. Have at it.

Regards,

Bob

I used a Rem 700 in 7STW with 175 gr Noslers on my first hunt in Botswanna. I took it because the thing would shoot .5 inch groups at 200 yrds and was truly confidence building! It killed everything from Impala to Zebra quite well. However, I never got over the feeling that it just wasn't enough gun. I was with terry palmer of Johan Calitz Safaris and he thought the cartridge did exceedingly well! With that said, I used a 300 Ultramag last year in the Selous and felt it was much more gun( same accuracy, but much more horsepower!) -Rob

Just curious-what make/model 7mm STW, and 300 Ultra Mag were you using? That's some great accuracy! [Cool]
