I had a Dakota 450 it was a basic model 76(i cant remember been a while)

anyways I cut 1.75" off the barrel and changed the front site, i didnt like the band on it, it looked cool but would snag in the jess and whack who ever is behind me in the thick jess.

i took off the wood stock and had a synthetic stock with the perfect LOP on it for me and took out 1 recoil reducer.

I had all the scope mounts etc. removed so its an open site gun forever, the rear leaf I had the world famous PH/gun smith Roy Vincent file the V notchI(my favorite thing about the gun; he also hammered the front bead a bit bigger it was soft brass and to smallhe smushed it out perfect.

i built it for one purpose-elephants. My back started to get bad but I went on one hunt and did shoot one cow at 35 yeads-one shot-game over didnt put an insurance shot in it

sorry about the spelling,

This is off the original topic but I am curious. I have only been to Africa on 3 safaris in 3 different countries. I have read a lot of both the modern and older African hunting books but I have never seen or heard the term "jess" in reference to what everyone else has referred to as "bush". What is the derivation of this term? Confused

Thanks!

JESS:
Thick and brushy plant growth; place in which you find yourself in deep, deep do-do when elephants, lions, buffalo and leopards are pissed at you.

origin:
When "that dirty little coward who shot Mr. Howard" actually only wounded Jesse James, the notorious outlaw fled the United States to South America (later followed by Robert Redford and Paul Newman). While there, he read the American newspaper accounts of early missionary work in Africa and decided to go help in the efforts to find the source of the Nile. There he met Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor with whom he plotted the overthrow of the Mugabe regime. Unfortunately, James speculated in the Zim dollar and lost his shirt. He then tried to pass the Zim PH exams, but had a Model 700 Remington that didn't extract and was failed by Don Heath. Grossly embarassed by his failure, he fled to the bush near Lake Kariba in shame. Elizabeth Taylor, now in love with him and wanting him to be her 27th husband, wandered the area crying out, "Jess, Jess!". The local folks picked up the name for the thick brush where James hid and Taylor sought him. Angela Jolie eventually rescued Taylor from her plight by adopting her. Incidently after Taylor lost several hundred pounds by drinking only Slim-Fast during her search, she invited Michael Jackson to the adoption ceremony and while there, Jackson impregnated Anna Nicole Smith (or what that Buz or Bill Stewart who did that? I know Ray tried, but forgot his Viagra.) James still haunts the Jess to this date and is believed to now be occasionally seen on the Booze Cruise on the Zambize, stealing canapes and toasting the setting sun with a good glass of Famous Grouse. I think I saw him after my seventh Oban.

Hi Eric,
Precious relic, that 450 Dakota M76 African, eh?
Sights famously hammered and filed by Roy Vincent: Did he do that sanctification "in the jess" with tools from his safari kit? I hope so. thumb

I have an open-sighted 450 Dakota Magnum Mauser that will remain just so. My barrel is 25" and weight is 9.5 pounds with 14.75" LOP that feels just right. It will remain just so.

I understand the desire for short, light, handy, and powerful in a bolt action.

The 450 Vincent Short would seem to be the perfect one for this, like the 450 G&A.

We have had some conjecture here about doing a .458/.375 Ruger, as it could have a few thou better shoulder than the 10.75x68 Mauser.

I think that cat should be called the 450 Ruger, and built on a Hawkeye or standard M98 Mauser.

I would go for 23" barrel and 7.5 pound weight.
That would be quite the baton for twirling in the jess to impress an elephant.

Members 465H&H and Yale have shown some interest in this "450 Ruger." I am interested too. Will do eventually.

Sorry I didn't get to catch up with you at the billiards event in Louisville, Kentucky. The NRA Convention will be in Louisville, KY in May, and that is going to be an interesting event. I'll go lobby Ruger and Hornady for a factory "450 Ruger African." Big Grin Who will own the first 450 Ruger?

Hope your back is better.

Best Regards,
Ron

LVEric, that does sound like a sweet elephant rifle.

I might have bought a bigger front bead, though, instead of hammering on the old one! Big Grin

But what the hell - I'm a pragmatist - if it works, go with it. Cool

thanks for asking about me, i'm in bad shape, been down for 3 years now, i live in constant pain, had numerous operations, etc.

anyways I was lucky enough to use that gun once and it was perfect, Alan Vincent called me this morning to see how my last operation went 13 days ago, I wanted to go hunting this year but I doubt I can, Sux to I am tired of laying in bed all the time. All is ok in Zim as of now, $49,000,000-$1USD today. Man thats brutal.
