Burkina Faso has opened hippo hunting due to an overpopulation of the handsome beasts. There is concern that elephants in B.F. are also overpopulating, but the government is opposed to elephant hunting.

dear Dan

I am with my friend outfitter and PH in Burkina Faso.
He assured me that the gov is badly wanting to make hunt :

HIPPO + ELE + CROCO

It's up to the gov and the CITES...

Jean,

Any chance of NON-EXPORT ele and hippo in B.F.? A multiple ele/hippo hunt would be great fun!

I think ALL ele are off limits at the moment. Hopefully this will change. It has seemed to me that the west African governments have been very wary about sticking their heads out when it comes to "conservation" of large animals. Hasn't helped the poaching much though, has it...

I would think a non-export ele/hippo hunt in B.F. would be great fun. West Africans are very friendly, and the varied cultural experiances in west africa is worth a trip in itself.

Burkina Faso is a facinating country, a ele and hippo hunt there would be world class fun.

Jean please keep us informed of any developments.

Hi all,

I just left Toufic, my Ph and outfitter friend.
The poor guy is stuck in France until the 11th december. Then he'll start the hunting season and work until end of may.
Yesterday morning he'll be with me and I'll convey him your questions.

Toufic is sitting at my side.

Toufic website

Concerning hippo, it seems the gov will sell hippo tags so as in some places a limited number of hippo be shot. The tags will not be the possession of outfitters but the state's.
With a tag, a client and a guide will have access to any concession.

In fact, the gov never imagined non trophy hunting. It is only considering Cites endorsed hunting of ele and croc. For the gov non trophy hunting is more than marginal.
Don't be fooled. There is a litle more than 2000 eles in BF. Even though ele hunting is closed since 1972, non heavy tuskers have appeared. It seems a very limited specialised poaching is croping the valuable eles.

Count on us to inform with any occuring developments.

Toufic is yet studying the opportunity of having a fluently English-speaking guide so as to offer comfortable hunt to Americans and Brits.

Anyhow, Toufic is a very influent personnality in BF. He will ask the gov a special(exceptionnal) permit to shoot an ele + an hippo as non trophy and if it's obtained I'll make you posted of this special bargain.

Jean Bernard, I would also be interested in developments in Burkina Faso. I did some resident hunting when I lived there from 1982 to 1985 (I even got married in Ougadougou!)but hippo were not possible.

hI Will

No problem.
If I may add something, I'll take the risk to tell You hunting was closed in the period 1980-85.

JB, It's amazing what one can learn on these forums. Now the guy I went hunting with (Georges Bachour, who later died of a heart attack when a buffalo he shot came after him)must have misled me. And the Eaux & Forets chaps that accompanied us didn't tell us either. Africa never ceases to amaze me.

Another development

LION

The Burkina will willingly diminish the lion's quota.
Now half of the former quota will be allowed,

so count on only 12 to 14 LION per Year.

Little doubt Cameroon and the CAR will act accordingly. The pressure to close lion hunting is remaining even though the last season was saved at the last CITES event.

What about the other countries?
