My friend and PH Ben just called me from Zim to tell me there are 5 bull elephant in the maturing corn in his area right now. They will keep coming back until one or more are shot.

We are looking for a PAC hunter who can leave within a day or three for Zim. $400/day x 5 days, plus $3000 for your ele. This is as close to a sure thing as you are going to get.

Russ,
Pls state which area is this in Zim?
Is Ben the lease holder and if not who is?

One's got to be sure before one commits to such an interesting offer in Zim.

Vuti, nr Karoi.

Ben has the rights to hunt PAC in this area. He took 5 PAC ele last year, all PAC. This is not a govt concession so your question regarding a lease is not applicable.

Vuti is just east of Charara S/A, south of Mana Pools N/P and west of Mukwishi Communal area.
Is this area Communal Land or ex farmland?
If communal it sounds like a good deal.

No they are not exportable (Unless you wanna pay dearly for the privilege). No PAC from Zim is, was or will be exportable. Best you can hope for is to sneak out your tail hair bracelet. But the memory is what matters, not what is hanging on the wall or propped up by the fireplace.

I would go in a heartbeat, would leave today, no quesitons asked at this price, but a little low on $$$$ - any body got anything going I could blackmail them on at the moment?

Not necessarily true. Ganyana can explain better than I can the rules with PAC Elephants.

I have hunted a PAC Elephant Bull that was exportable. The trophy fee was reduced, and it was legally exportable. I was offered $6000 on the trophy fee. This was about 13 years ago though. We never found the Bull that causing problems, so I did not shoot it.

PAC cows are not exportable. Bulls, on the other hand ... I guess it depends on the situation.

Ganyana?

According to Ganyana, in 2005 when I was in Zim on a PAC elephant hunt, no PAC animal is exportable. You can buy the tusks and hide from the Tribal counsel for a substantially increased price (once they have been "worked"), but you have no rights to either unless you meet the demands and price hike of the counsel. Everything has a price, especially in Africa. But then aren’t their not even supposed to be foreigners shooting PAC animals anymore? I thought I saw a thread on that awhile back. There are called meat ration hunts now or something??? If I was/am wrong, oops.

They are not exportable, just a pic. There is no CITES permit for these elephant. The ivory is worked and then sold as trinkets. The meat goes to the locals and some of it is used for meat for crocs. There is a croc farm in the picture here, not sure exactly how that works.

This is communal land to the best of my knowledge.

The hunt is spoken for. Dirk Rohrmann out of Namibia is flying in tomorrow. We'll post pics.

Thanks,

Incidentally, we book these hunts through end of May and again in late Sept/October until the first rain. During these times, you can be reasonably sure of getting your PAC with an advance booking. The best month of all is April. So it's not necessary to do a PAC hunt like this at the drop of a hat.

And for future reference, there is no advance firearms permit required for Zim, you just show up at the airport with your rifle. Only thing, DO NOT FLY BA from JNB to Harare. You can fly BA into JNB but you should not use BA for your final leg. This really should not be an issue for hunters originating in the USA>

Now I recall reading here a couple of years ago that BA makes it awkward to transfer bags to SAA for local routes but I think that was either rumor or has blown over.

Anyone care to add to that?

Got word today that Dirk got his PAC on day (well actually night) 4.

Conditions: good weather but 10' high grass in many places. Scary.

First night: got close to a est 40lb per side bull in the long grass. Ben (PH) made decision to pull back because of elephant noise on too many sides. Not safe to shoot. Dirk was not happy but safety first.

Second night: got close to group but elephants winded them

Third night: got into cows with calves...withdrew.

Fourth night: got a young bull.

There is no shortage of PACable eles in this area this year. Mar and April are best months as the crops are reaching maturity and the harvest begins. If planning to segue to a PG or buff hunt, May or June are not a bad choice either. The PAC success rate is low in July through mid Sept, then pics up again at the end of the dry season until the first rains fall (mid Oct). As you can see from the pics below, there have been good rains and the grass is very tall...makes for a really hairy hunt.
