I notice that Namibia is starting along the lines of South Africa and attracting much interest in wildlife game auctions ... ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Namibia: Record Prices At Agra's Catalogue Game Auction Namibia Economist (Windhoek) May 19, 2006 The annual Outjo catalogue game auction, which was presented by Agra on 6 May, was a resounding success. A total of 885 animals were on offer, ranging from antelope to large game including ostrich, giraffe and rhinoceros. The auction posted a turnover of well in excess of N$3 million with 36 buyers from all over Namibia participating. Frans Indongo, a well-known businessman and farmer, successfully bid on white rhinoceros and paid the top price of N$180,000 for one species alone. The shooting competition, which was part of the Outjo game festival, is presented by Agra's Outjo branch. It is a standard bench rest competition 100m, and about 50 participants entered the competition. Alex Hatzenberg won the first prize with a grouping of 9 mm (rule: smallest grouping closes to target), with Gert Lambert and Jan van Zyl in second and third position respectively These and other game purchased at the auction will be relocated to his farm near Otjiwarongo. The highest price obtained for a roan antelope was N$60,000, while waterbuck and nyala obtained the average price of N$8000 and N$9500 respectively. Sable antelope obtained a price up to N$32000, red lechwes sold for N$15000 each while eland went for N$5000. Pieter Hugo, Agra's senior manager livestock is satisfied with results of the auction. "Agra has a good name in the livestock industry. Buyers know of our solid reputation for presenting professional auctions, and many rely heavily on the added value offered by our wide-ranging expertise when expanding their game. "But not only the auction was a spectacular event, the entire festival organized by the Otjikondo farmers association was a huge success, drawing crowds from near and far around Namibia. Our partners, the organizers of this mammoth happening can truly be proud of their achievement." A former principal of the Neudamm Agricultural College and former deputy director in the ministry of agriculture, Pieter Hugo holds an MSc in animal breeding. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Cheers .... | ||
