Two Black Rhino Opportunities Become Available in Namibia

(posted June 04, 2013)

Hunters interested in a black rhino should contact their favorite Namibian operator immediately about applying for one of two newly available permits. The Ministry of Environment and Tourism (MET) is accepting bids for two old, male black rhinos through 1pm (13:00), June 14, 2013.

Applicants for the rhino permits must be Namibia Tourism Board registered Namibian companies, owned by or having in their employment a Namibian MET registered Professional Hunter licensed to hunt big game. Only one rhinoceros permit will be issued to any one company. The rhino must be hunted by the end of November 2013, and written financial offers should indicate when the rhinoceros would be hunted.

Your operator can send a bid to the Ministry of Environment and Tourism, Northern Industrial Area, Ruhr Street #4, PZN Building, Ground Floor, Office #7, on or before the June 14th deadline. Bids will be opened on the day of the deadline. Winners must make full payment by July 5, 2013, or the sale of the permit will be cancelled. So, be prepared to pay your operator the full amount of the bid up-front should he win the permit. Also, be aware that the permit is very specific about which rhino you will be able to shoot. Namibia's program allows for the removal of only the oldest, post-reproduction bulls. Additionally, these hunts are fundraising activities for Namibia's rhino conservation program and are very pricey. The US hunter who was recently awarded an import permit from US Fish & Wildlife for his black rhino trophy paid $225,000 for his hunt, with $175,000 going directly into the special wildlife conservation fund.

There are a number of qualified Namibian operators who could handle a rhino hunt. If you are interested in this opportunity and don't have a safari operator in mind, check our database for reports on operators who have conducted dangerous game hunts for other Hunting Report subscribers in Namibia. We are indebted to John J. Jackson, III, of Conservation Force for informing us of this opportunity. See the May issue of World Conservation Force Bulletin for details on Namibia's black rhino program. - Barbara Crown, Editor
