Just returned from the Selous

I'll post a full report when I recover from the jet lag

Back in November I posted asking if taking a 15 year old on a DG was a good idea. I received a resounding yes. You were all correct!!

A couple of preliminaries. My wife, 15 year old son Jacob and I booked a 2x1 7 day hunt PVT. Our PH was Wikus.

We talked about the increased fees but that is all we did---talk. It didn't affect our hunt at all.

I wanted my son to do most of the shooting and he did.

As a parent it was one of the best times I have ever spent with my family.

Here's what we didn't do during this hunt: we didn't watch TV during dinner. We didn't have the internet or ipods or dvds or any of those other distractions

We did sit around the dinner table each eveing and talk. We did go on some very long hikes and got into buffalo most every day.

We did share all the new sights and sounds of the Selous.

Wikus told my son after he shot his buffalo that he couldn't have drawn a better text book example of where to place a shot. You can imagine I was beaming with pride; he takes after the old man. I'm kidding , I can't shoot for sh#t.

The hunt was as exciting as ones you read about; long grass, semi-charging buffalo, mambas, the whole nine yards.

I'll post day by day report with pics.

Those of you who have teenagers who hunt; don't put it off. Skip the 35k 4x4 mega truck and take your family hunting.

I'll probably never again be able to spent this much quality time with my family again.

This trip to the selous was almost an "awaking" and I wouldn't have traded the time I spent with my family for anything.

How nice to see someone has learnt the basics of bringing a teenager into adulthood. Spend uninterrupted quality time together!

Skip the 4X4, Quadbike, house renovation, saving for university - if you don't bring up a young MAN [or WOMAN] he/she is not going to do well at advanced study anyway - and take him/her hunting in Africa.

Die Ou Jagter

Nothing better than spending time in the field with a son or daughter hunting. My best of times have been with my son in the field (daughter is a greenie), we haven't made it to Africa and my never as he has said the flight to Scotland was as much flying he wants over water. I will keep working on him as taking his son and daughter to Africa would be the fulfilment of my greatest dream.
