I was just looking at www.cabelas.com gun library inventory and noticed that they seem to be offering a limited run Winchester Model 70 African Edition custom .458 Lott. Is this a limited run produced for Cabelas? Has anyone seen one? It looked interesting. Price around $2000. RCG

I was in Sidney, Nebraska, at the original Headquarters store, Saturday last, and saw one. They are much like the Big Five Series rifles from the Custom Shop. That series had 125 of each of the five different caliber rifles, but no .458 Lott. This latest, of a new series, was in .458 Lott, has some gold inlay on the floorplate, maybe it was a cape buffalo, maybe the price tag said $1995, but I wasn't taking notes. I did pay close attention to the receiver contours and scope mounting holes. They seemed to be square and true, unlike the run-of-the-mill M70's that have been shipped out en masse in recent years. For $2K one would at least be able to mount a scope properly without significant gunsmithing.

I handled one at the Wheeling, WV. store several weeks back. It felt light to me at least for a 458 Lott. The stock had above average figure, but I was not real nuts about the way the grain ran through the wrist. The metal fit and finish was above average to my eye. I beleive the open sights to be the same as on the other Express models. It had a nice wide deselerator type pad. HBH
