Uganda:Buffaloes Destroy Crops in Rukungiri District Jansen Asiima 4 January 2010 Rukungiri — Marauding buffaloes from the Queen Elizabeth National Park have driven residents of Kikarara Parish in Bwambara Sub-county in Rukungiri District, out of their homes, according to area authorities. Kikarara Parish councillor Chris Kagayano told journalists that the animals, which escaped from the park a few days before Christmas, have destroyed crops and driven people out of their homes. Mr Kagayano said so far a number of homes have been vacated because the animals have made it a routine to attack them in the night whenever they see fire. "Pleas by the residents to the Uganda Wild life Authority to take the buffaloes back home have fallen on deaf ears," he said last on Friday. Mr Kagayano added: "Famine is expected here soon if nothing is done to rescue us from these dangerous animals." Efforts to contact the area park warden were futile as his telephone was switched off. All I have to say about this is: "Have gun, will travel"! On the plains of hesitation lie the bleached bones of ten thousand, who on the dawn of victory lay down their weary heads resting, and there resting, died. If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue, Or walk with Kings - nor lose the common touch... Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it, And - which is more - you'll be a Man, my son! - Rudyard Kipling Life grows grim without senseless indulgence. | |||
