Well, I have managed to work myself into a rant! I posted a previous thread concerning scopes for Elephant hunting....etc. etc.

I got so many good replies, and I appreciate them. NOT THE LEAST OF WHICH WAS TO EQUIPT MY RIFLE WITH QD rings. SO.....here is my problem.

I Like Rugers. I own Rugers. I shoot Rugers.
Blah...blah...blah. SO, since Rugers have their own special ring set up for their rifles. I cannot understand WHY they do not make a QD ring set-up specifically for their Magnum and African rifles??? I just do not get it. I have spoken to the Ruger people at the regular shows...Dallas, Reno/Vegas. They just shrug their shoulders.
I do not care IF they charge an exhorbinate price. Guys who hunt in Africa would pay it.
JUST MAKE EM'.

bcoyler,

Have you tried taking off the scope and then reattaching it to see if the POI changes a noteable amount? Might work just fime.

I had a 7x57 that I took the scope off and then reattached and the POI did not change. I could see having levers on the rings would be a very cool thing, especially for the big guys, but I think the rings are pretty good.

Warne makes QD rings that work fine on the Ruger Safari Magnum. I presume they would work on the African too.

Check Brownells. Used to be a company that made levers to convert factory Rugers. If not, carry a quarter in your pocket.

I take mine off and on my No.1 (same Ruger ring system) in .450/.400 NE all the time and no problem returning to same POI. If you know you're going to be doing this alot and checking screw tension it can be done quickly with a quarter or even better with a Canadian loonie ($1 coin).

I have warnes on one of my alaskans but just use the factory rings on my african and other rugers. No problem with re-zero, just keep a quarter or a leatherman handy.

P.S. Wasn't the lever available from Brownells called a "Pilkington" lever?

I have a really simple solution.
If Ruger doesn't offer what you want.
Don't buy a Ruger.

If your parents didn't have any children chances are you won't either.

Dear Bcolyer

1. Why do you need to take the scope of?

If i am not mistaken not removing the scope worked for the last 50 years.

Just another new gadget to cost you money.

Kind Regards Mark

Cabelas carry the Warne QR rings for the Ruger. Have to look a little for them--but they do carry them. Mid-Way USA does also! Good Luck w/hunt!!

There was a company in the US that used to sell the QD lever and screws to convert the standard Rugers mounts into QD's...

Speaking of Rugers, their use of T-10 Torx screws on Ruger rings is a much bigger issue than the slotted nuts at the point of contact to the receiver. T-10 Torx screw just don't allow you enough oomph to tighten things down on heavy recoiling rifles. T-10 screws are just cheap.

It was. I have a set and see them at gun shows from time to time.
I've never had trouble with Ruger rings not going back to zero.

Well, that is what I have on my Ruger...

Made from solid Titanium, black plasma coated, but NO QD levers as I prefer a allen wrench - so it could not get loose anyhow...

Warne, or try Alaska Arms, LLC. The latter makes QD lever type for CZs and might make them for Rugers. www.alaskaarmsllc.com

they are called Pilkington levers and they work great. bought a pair from Brownell's 20 years ago to go on a Whitworth .375 and all these years later, they still work as advertised. scope removed in 10 seconds and absolute return to zero when reattached.

What I can't understand about Ruger is why they only offer the 416 Alaskan with a 20" barrel. Since they don't offer this caliber in the African model with the longer barrel, how much trouble would it be to offer the Alaskan with your choice of a 20 or 23" barrel. For me, it's not so much about the slight increase in velocity with the longer barrel but the increase in muzzle blast with the shorter barrel.
