A friend has come up with an offer for a 2/1 elephant hunt in Zim with a black PH named Evans Makanza. The hunt would be in a campfire area named Nyami Nyami near lake Kariba. From what I've learned most of this guys clients are South Africans. He also hunts in the Chara and Matetsi areas. This would be for a rations hunt for non exportable elephants. He claims he can get two permits and maybe even four. Has anyone hunted with this guy or know anything about his area? Any and all information would be greatly appreciated.

Nyaminyami is the Omay Comunal lands. It is divided into north and south concessions. Martin Peters has the North Concession and Joe Wright the South Concession. I understand that HHK is no longer operating the South Concession and Martin Peters is contracting it from Joe. Ohter free lance PHs have used these the South Concession in the past under permission from the current safari operator. Martin posts here and would be better able to answer your question. I don't know Makansa but again Martin will know. You can PM him at martin@bulembisafaris.co.zw

A so called PH who got his license by being related to an appropriate person, who hunts in a blue caftan...generally behind a south african PH who needs a Zim one along to make the hunt 'legit'!. It is the likes of Evans and ahandful of others who undermine the value of the rest of the black PH's in Zim- who fairly obtaned licenses and are often superb hunters. If evans were on fire, I wouldn't piss on him to put it out - and he knows it!

Thanks guys for the information. That's what I love about this site - such a wealth of knowledge. Looks like we'll have to cross him off the list.

I hunted with Evans about ten years ago in Deka. He worked for a man called Toby Musariri, I dont remember the name of the company. Was a fat man but a good PH. Only he stoelen the money I gave him for to pay the taxidermist... I had lot of problem for to have my trophy at home. So be careful

465H&H is spot on, for the records, Evans Makanza DOES NOT HAVE ANY QUOTA in the Omay North and or South, I am following this up as we speak.
Tom Z, can you send me more info on your friend and his contact details etc.

Thanks

Gents:
I hunted with Evans on the Zambezi for Buffalo and Hippo in 2003. The fat guy is a joke. Some days we didn't start hunting until 10am. I paid for a 7 day hunt in Matetsi. When I got off the plane at Vic Falls a message was waiting for me that said take a flight to Bulawayo and up to Harare as the hunt area changed. Then I was offered a 5 day hunt. I shot a nice buff, true, but he and his workers went off drinking and broke the hunting vehicle so no hippo. Then, there was a year's delay due to a cockup of the trophy fee and paperwork. I wouldn't give this clown the time of day. He spent hours on his cell phone following well behind the tracker and myself to chat with his numerous girl friends and potential clients while shirking his duties to his present client. I have heard he had lost his PH license but do not have confirmation of this.
Beware.

Rhyme of the Sheep Hunter
May fordings never be too deep, And alders not too thick; May rock slides never be too steep And ridges not too slick.
And may your bullets shoot as swell As Fred Bear's arrow's flew; And may your nose work just as well As Jack O'Connor's too.
May winds be never at your tail When stalking down the steep; May bears be never on your trail When packing out your sheep.
May the hundred pounds upon you Not make you break or trip; And may the plane in which you flew Await you at the strip.

After my post I remembered my trophy fee was missing (Evans had it) and two South African PHs worked to get it back for me. And, one of the PHs needed a Zim PH to hunt with us.
Stay away from EM.

Sounds like someone needs to book a lion hunt with this guy, and use him for bait!

Wonder how he keeps his PH license?
Is it one of those "Who you know or are related to issues"?

The description of the hunt alone should have been enough to warn anyone considering it.

Well, I will be the one to change the tone.

I like Evans. I hunted with him in 08 and had a great experience.
He ran a very good camp in the absence of the Camp Manager/Owner.
I hunted the way I wanted to hunt, We spent time hunting into the night for Hyena and when my plans had to change from traveling to Kariba for Hippo, Evans took me to Bulawayo and then back to Victoria Falls and got me into a fine hotel and out on a boat cruise at the last minute.
He also arranged for me to hunt Croc on a neighboring concession (even though we did not find a croc over 12 feet) that was fun.
All in all he was very active during the hunt, and kept his cool when we had a Buffalo bust out of the Scrub at less than ten paces.
Here is the link to my Hunt reports.

Here we are with my Buffalo.

Here evans raises the hand of one of the camp staff who won the shooting contest we had after I declared myself content with the hunt.

I also loaned him money long distance.
I am still in touch with Evans and his Wife as well as
the owner of Nyala Safari so if anyone wants to send me a PM, I will gladly go into more details of my experience with him.

In the face of lots of adverse comments, I admire your loyalty. It sounds like the fellow did a good job for you and it's refreshing to hear someone relate his opinion about a positive experience instead of being afraid of what the "other guys" will think.

Evans may, or not be, be a scoundrel (He surely does have his detractors), but he apparently did you right and good for you for telling about your positive experience.
