A world class success story, too bad no one will learn from it. The main vice of capitalism is the uneven distribution of prosperity. The main vice of socialism is the even distribution of misery. -- Winston Churchill

A real shame and indicative of many areas of concern. Dogcat, the hotel reminds me of that one place in Tulsa by the river...can't remember the name but right beside the highway and it looks like a castle? It's more like a crack house now. _______________________________

You refer to the old Camelot Inn. It was sold to one of the transendental meditation guru's who walked (or levitated) out of here. It was recently sold to Quik Trip and they are in the process of tearing it down. Finally. It was/is an eyesore and a part time crack house.

Actually looking at those pictures, to be quite honest, it is not as BAD as one would think after 30+ years, at least they have not smashed or broken the buildings down, in fact it would not take that much hard work to carry out some sort of restoration. I have seen at LOT LOT WORSE in other parts of Southern Africa Cheers, Peter

Looks like Havana, except there are no '57 Chevies. Did the Cubans provide architectural assistance too? Mike Wilderness is my cathedral, and hunting is my prayer.

I traveled through the Zambian town of Livingston with a guy was born there when it was a town in North Rhodesia. He was so saddened by the new look.

Reminescent of the old Game Warden facilities in Tanzania, where at one time the British had the manicured lawns, the white houses, freshly painted out buildings, glass windows, fish ponds, trees, white picket fences. What beautiful places they were. Today, it consists of Tanzanian Game Scouts liveing in the buildings, no furniture (used for firewood) no windows left, no doors, no lawns, trash everywhere, fish strung up all over along with gut jerky, chickens roosting in the rafters, just a run down place in the dirt that reminds one of days gone by and a better time. I don't expect it to be any different, I accept it as it is because it is their way of life and so be it...I just don't happen to agree with it, but then I am not of a tribal mind set. There is a hotel on the Dar waterfront that used to be the place to stay. I believe it is a "training college" nowadays. Looks similar to this place. Maybe Bwanamich can get a pic of it next time he is in Dar.

The trees past the pool must not grow very fast. Africa and Africans are not able to rule their own countries. In 30 more years there will be nothing left. It will look like it did 100 years ago, primitive people living off the land.

I agree. Starting to look like it did before "whitey" arrived and civilized.

mrlexma: Were you thinking of the building that overlooked the Malecon and was very advanced for its time in a modern "tropical" look? (No, of course, not the Nacional) I just can't remember its name. Must be having a "senior moment". (Pan-Am Building?)

I don't think us Westerns have done very well either. It took about 1700 years to get past the idea that kings are the way to go after having a "go" at democracy (Greeks and Romans). We reverted to democracy and still do not get it right. Communism and socialism have not worked, so why are we critical of the African? We have not set much of an example as far as a government is concerned.[/QUOTE
