Gents, I am loading 210 gr Tipped TSX's for my PG hunt in SA....no DG this trip...I'm WELL EQUIPED for those. Based upon Barnes loading recommendations, I am shoting a load of RL15 that is JUST over (.3 gr) their max. Chrony says 2650 fps and there are no pressure signs. I don't have time to screw around with hotter loads at this time.
Question...we'll be hunting in the Free State where a 250 yd shot will not be unusual...the bullet at 300 yds is moving at 2050 fps according to the Barnes tables. Do any of you all see this being an issue? I've heard the tipped bullets from Barnes open a bit quicker than the non-tipped.
The gun ( a Weatherby Ultralite) keeps this load at about 3/4 MOA. I just don't want to pass on a 300 yard shot on that georgeous Balck Wildee if the bullet will do its job.
....and, yes, I'm capable of putting the bullet in the right spot from that distance.

Thoughts?

THANKS!

Gary

I use the 210 NP in my 338-06 and I'm thinking the Tipped TSX should even better. A zero of 2" high at 100 yards should put you about 8"-9" low at 300. Looks to me like you should be fine for everything.

Good luck!

Mark

Thanks, Mark. I actually have 60 rounds left of 210 Partition that I got with the rifle when I bought it new about 8 years ago. It was loaded by Superior Ammo...my dealer got me a present since I basically kept him in bidness...BUT it was loaded in formed brass from 35 Whelen...which of course won't cut it when importing into SA. The Barnes shoot real good (as do the Partitions) and I had a bunch of them. I'm not used to taking such small bores to Africa!

Thanks!

Garby, Have no fear friend, thats about spot on to a huntin buddies load, he pushes his 210 TTSX A 2700 from a 25'' tube, I have helped him dress whitetail, muledeer, elk and a hog (340lbs) over the last several seasons. All game hit at 0 yds to just over 300, most lasersd, never a recovered bullet, all bone, meat, mud-caked hide and grisel plate (pig) was wrecked by that TTSX. Good Luck on Your Hunt. Jerry

I used the 210 gr. Barnes XLC loaded to about 2750fps in a .338-06. Took six animals with six shots in 2007. Was told the Zebra would not go down with one shot. It is the animal that regained its feet but then went down within ten feet. Don't think that you will have any problems.

GarBy,

If you want to know what your bullet will look like at 300 yards, you can shoot it into a couple of five gallon nylon Home Depot buckets and be within about 90-95% of what expansion and weight retention will be on game animals.

If that is too small of a target you can fill up a blue nylon 40 gallon barrel and lay it on end.

I have a good freind who has used his 338-06 in Africa three times with excellent results. Like you, he used both the 210 nos and TSX.

Garby,

They will open without a doubt... Whenever a Barnes bullet did not open it was because the tip was deformed... A hollow tip dropped will close up the opening, hence no expansion but it will penetrate like hell... The inserts act like a wedge and they pop open in the first 1.5inches of impacting... They will tear up your animals...
Have a great hunt and make the shot...

Mike
