Buffalo kills 3 in Katete
By Christopher Miti in Chipata
Sun 10 Apr. 2011, 04:00 CAT

THREE people died on Friday after being attacked by a stray buffalo in chief Kawaza’s area in Katete district.

District commissioner Eleman Mwanza said the deceased were attacked by the buffalo in their maize fields on Friday morning.

Mwanza named the victims as Tisiyeni Banda of Kondwelani village, Sarah Phiri of Mponda village and Tinenenji Phiri who died at St Francis Mission Hospital.

The buffalo was later killed with a hoe by Sekelani Phiri, the husband of one of the deceased.

Mwanza said Phiri rescued his children aged 3 and 5 from the rampaging buffalo.
He described the incident as tragic.

The buffalo is believed to have come from Mozambique.

And an eyewitness headman Chinzu appealed to ZAWA and the government to come to the aid of residents before lives were lost.

Headman Chinzu said the buffalo also attacked headman Chikwa also of Kawaza chiefdom.

Meanwhile, Mwanza also said a hippo is reported to be eating people’s crops at one of the dams in the same area.

He appealed to Zambia Wildlife Authority (ZAWA) to quickly kill the hippo before it starts attacking people.

Many people have complained to ZAWA about the human-animal conflict that has seen loss of life in Eastern Province.

May those poor souls rest in peace. That must be a brave man to kill a buffalo with a hoe.Can understand the anger at the death of his wife and the danger his children were in.

A "cold steel" hoe perhaps? If thee knife doesn't work, use the hoe - a great line for the ads! Wink

Well if our early ancestors could kill mammoths with spears & rocks, why not a buffalo with a hoe?

I don't think this is what most Americans or Europeans think of when thinking of a HOE. I think it was probably a GRUBING HOE, a much more substantial weapon. Having a very sharp long spike on one side, and a heavy cross AXE on the other, and with a long heavy handle.

STILL..................Not a weapon I'd care to take on a cape buffalo with, CRF, PF, OR DOUBLE! shocker

The hoe must have dispatched it with a .416 before going back to her street corner.

Seriously, I'd love to know the details of this story.
