Uganda: Buffalo Injures Ten in Mbarara Abdulkarim Ssengendo 9 January 2009 Kampala — TEN people were injured and one goat killed by a buffalo which attacked three villages in Nyamitanga Division Mbarara Municipality. The injured were three women, six men and one child. They were rushed to different clinics while others were taken to Mbarara Referral Hospital. Some of the injured were on their way to Mbarara town while the others were harvesting millet in their gardens. Nyamitanga Division LC3 chairman, Joseph Kamanzi, said the buffalo attacked them at around 7:30am on Thursday and it went around destroying banana plantations, people's houses and killing other animals. He said it took three hours to fight the animal until it was shot. "It was going to kill people, animals and destroy property. Therefore we were right to kill it," he said. Kamanzi appealed to Uganda Wildlife Authority to be vigilant and protect their animals so that they do not escape from game reserves and cause havoc in surrounding areas. He said they suspect it escaped from Lake Mburo National Park in Kiruhura. Kathi kathi@wildtravel.net 708-425-3552 "The world is a book, and those who do not travel read only one page." | ||

I guess it could have been the other way around, killed 10 people and injured 1 goat? Interesting comments by those involved. Are the game reserves in Uganda under high fence? If not how would they keep them from escaping? Kathi, I don't know where you come up with these stories, but keep them coming as I really enjoy hearing all the on the ground stuff.
